Markku Veijanen wins his first international title in Czech Open 2014

    Finn averages over 250 in last eliminator round to earn the 2.500 Euro top prize; high-scoring 12th edition of the event features eight 300 games and one 299

    2014CzechOpenMarkkuVeijanen2.jpgMarkku Veijanen (pictured) of Finland rolled games of 267 and 238 in the last eliminator round of the Czech Open 2014 to win his first international title and the 2.500 Euro top prize Sunday at Bowland bowling center in Olomouc, Czech Republic.

    The 12th edition of the event drew 222 players from 20 countries, 182 men and 40 women, and offered total prize fund of 13.140 Euro.

    2014CzechOpenAnzeGrabrijan.jpgAnže Grabrijan (right) of Slovenia used a pair of 300 games to win the qualifying with 1648 six-game total, an average of 274.67, en route to lead the top 78 players into the finals on Sunday, July 6. Grabrijan and the next five players, all from the Czech Republic, received two byes.

    2014CzechOpenTop4.jpg In two four-game rounds, the field was trimmed to 22 players who joined the top six qualifiers in the eliminator round finals. The field of 28 players was split into seven four-player groups.

    All players bowled two games, with the two lowest-scoring player in each group being eliminated (note: two "lucky losers" advanced in the first round). In the rounds to follow, the same "low men out" format applied.

    After three eliminator rounds, the four remaining players squared off in the championship round featuring Veijanen, Grabrijan, Björn Einar Rudshagen of Norway and Austria's Michael Loos (above l-r).

    2014CzechOpenMarkkuVeijanen.jpg 2014CzechOpenMichaelLoos.jpgVeijanen (left) started the two-game total pins round with 267 but was closely followed by Loos (right, with Rudshagen in the background; 259) and Grabrijan (246) with Rudshagen some 40 pins behind with a low game of 228.

    The Norwegian posted 266 in the second game to overtake Loos (487) and Grabrijan (485), but came up 11 pins short, losing to Veijanen, 505-494. Rudshagen earned 1.300 Euro for second place, while Loos and Grabrijan received 800 Euro and 700 Euro for third and fourth place, respectively.
