Reigning Professional Bowlers Association Player of the Year Wes Malott (pictured left) of Pflugerville, Texas, is still alive in the PBA World Championships tripleheader at Thunderbowl Lanes, but 11 of the 16 players who earned byes for two rounds went home Friday.

In total, one of seven players in the PBA World Championship, three of four women in the Women's World Championship, and one of four in the Senior World Championship who were exempt from the first two rounds of best-of-seven-game, single-elimination match play survived Friday's early rounds.

Malott, the top qualifier in the men's field, defeated Martin Larsen of Sweden, 4-3, to advance to Friday night's Round of 8.

No. 2 Mike Scroggins of Amarillo, Texas, was eliminated by Steve Rogers of Bourbonnais, Ill., 4-3; No. 3 Sean Rash of Wichita, Kan., was ousted by Dave D'Entremont of Middleburg Heights, Ohio, 4-1; No. 4 Mika Koivuniemi of Hartland, Mich., was defeated by Rhino Page of Wesley Chapel, Fla., 4-3; No. 5 Mike DeVaney of San Diego was surprised by Jason Couch of Clermont, Fla., 4-0; No. 6 Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, was upset by Thomas Smallwood of Saginaw, Mich., 4-1; No. 7 Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla., was swept by Bill O'Neill of Southampton, Fla., and No. 8 Tommy Jones of Simpsonville, S.C., was sidelined by Jeff Carter of Springfield, Ill., 4-2.

In the Senior World Championship, four-time reigning PBA Senior Player of the Year Tom Baker (right) of King, N.C., defeated his likely successor, top qualifier and three-time 2009 Senior Tour titlist Ron Mohr of Eagle River, Alaska, 4-3. No. 3 Harry Sullins of Chesterfield Township, Mich., was the only top four qualifier in the senior field to advance, slipping past Kerry Painter of Henderson, Nev., 4-3. No. 2 Kent Wagner of Palmetto, Fla., was knocked out by Brian Brazeau of Ocala, Fla., 4-2, and No. 4 Dave Patchen of Oregon, Ohio, was eliminated by Hugh Miller of Seattle, 4-1.

No. 3 Michelle Feldman of Auburn, N.Y., was the only seeded woman eliminated, losing to Missy Bellinder of Fullerton, Calif., 4-2.

The final of elimination matches for all three World Championships will be conducted Friday night with the four men, two seniors and two women winners advancing to the television finals. The Women's and Senior World Championship title matches will be contested Saturday at noon for delayed telecast on ESPN. The men's finals will be contested live on ESPN on Dec. 13 at Northrock Lanes in Wichita, Kan.
