Sean Rash takes early lead in Viper Championship
10/27/10

Sean Rash (pictured left) of Wichita, Kan., averaged 236.17 for his first six games in the Viper Championship qualifying round during the second day of competition at the Professional Bowlers Association World Series of Bowling at South Point Bowling Center Tuesday.
Rash finished his morning session with a total of 1,417 pins for a 14-pin lead over fellow Wichita resident Lonnie Waliczek (right), and it was Waliczek, with an 18-game total of 4,382 pins after his Cheetah and early Viper sessions, jumped into the early lead in the PBA World Championship race.
Gregory Thompson Jr. tied Rash for the lead in Squad B and reigning U.S. Open champion Bill O'Neill, Southampton, Pa., moved into third place with 1,415 pushing Waliczek to fourth. Finn Mika Koivuniemi, an eight-time PBA champion who is living in Hartland, Mich., was fifth with 1,397.

Colombia's Andres Gomez (left) is the second international bowler among the top 16 in eighth place with 1,382 and Koivuniemi's compatriot Kimmo Lehtonen (right) the third in 12th place with 1,371. With another six games to go, Eddie VanDaniker Jr., Essex, Md., holds the 16th and last place to advance to round robin match play with 1,353 (225.50).
The PBA World Championship standings will be based on 60 games total pinfall after 12-game rounds on five different PBA lane conditions this week.
Rash, a four-time Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour champion who hasn't won a title since 2007, is one of those with his eye on the bigger prize.
"Over the last couple of years, the Viper has been the hardest pattern for me," Rash said. "But the PBA made a change in the pattern and I had an open mind going in today, and I bowled really well. I'm just going to try to build off of it. There are 42 games left in main event and the Viper is just another stage.
"I pressed hard on Cheetah pattern Monday morning," he continued, "but on the fresh oil in the second session, I bowled unbelievable. I really gave it a run last night and I was having some fun. When you press it sucks. It's no fun. But there are a lot of games left, but everyone's goal is to make top 8 for the World Championship, so that's going to be my focus."
The World Series field of 252 will complete 12 games on the Viper lane condition today, followed by 12-game qualifying rounds on the Chameleon, Scorpion and Shark Championship patterns over the next three days. In addition to the overall standings, the top 16 on each daily pattern will advance to round-robin match play rounds to compete for those respective championships next week.
