Singapore women cruise to Doubles Gold at 21st Asian Championships

Malaysia, takes, silver, Indonesia gets bronze, Koreans empty-handed in 4th through 6th

Daphne Tan and Bernice Lim (l-r) of Singapore averaged 225.25 over six team games on medium oil to cruise to the gold medal in Women Doubles in the 21st Asian Championships at Khalifa Bowling Center in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

The duo had games of 472, 440, 459, 436, 478 and 418. Tan led the team with the field-best 1418 series and an average of 236.33 including one of two 279 games and the highest 3-game series of 724. Lim contributed 1285.

Trailing the Singaporeans by 75 pins to take the silver medal were Jacqueline Sijore and Siti Safiyah Amirah (right, l-r) of Malaysia, who started and finished their 2636 series (219.83) with 481 games.

Sharon Limansantoso and Putty Armein (below left, r-l) of Indonesia beat out three Korean Doubles to earn the bronze medal with 2586 (215.50). Armein posted the other 279 game.

The Korean women, who have won five gold, five silver and three bronze medals in the 2008 Hong Kong Asian Championships and swept all individual medals (Singles, All Events and Masters), finished in fourth through sixth place.

Hwang Sun-Ok/Son Yun-Hee (2583), Shin Bo-Hyun/Hong Su-Yeon (2558) and Jeon Eun-Hee/Gye Min-Young (2512) are still looking to win the first gold medal for the leading country in women's bowling.

Sun-Ok, who was second in Singles, overtook the lead in All Events after 12 out of 24 games (combined results of Singles, Doubles, Trios and Team) with 2697 and an average of 224.75. Singles bronze medalist Siti Shazwani, Malaysia, moved into second place with 2678. Daphne Tan jumped from 11th to third place with 2655. Singles champion Lexi Nicoll, Australia, fell to 20th place with 2422.

The 62 women from 12 countries - Australia, Bahrain, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Iran, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore and UAE - will return on Wednesday morning for the first 3-game block of the Trios competition on medium oil.
