PBA Hall of Famer Parker Bohn III (pictured with wife Leslie) joined a short list of outstanding individuals who have been named recipients of the Bowling Proprietors' Association of America Dick Weber Bowling Ambassador Award during BPAA's annual meeting in Grapevine, Texas, on June 27.

Bohn's contributions to the sport, on and off the lanes, exemplify the contributions made by the late bowling legend.

"Receiving this award will go among the best achievements of my career," Bohn said. "When I think of Dick Weber, I think of a class act, an honorable, true gentleman and a great ambassador for our sport."

 

PBA Regional Roundup: Haugen wins Sunday Doubleheader

It was "double header" Sunday for Michael Haugen Jr. (left) of Cave Creek, Ariz. At the same time he was helping his 900 Global team win the GEICO PBA Team Shootout on ESPN, he was defeating Chuck Tillson of Rohnert Park, Calif., 237-213, to win the PBA West Region Vanessa Brown Homes Open at Yosemite Lanes in Modesto, Calif. Haugen's 14th career PBA Regional victory on July 3 earned him a $2,000 first prize.

Also over the Fourth of July weekend, Kenny Parks of Hammond, Ind., def. John Dudak, Orland Park, Ill., 217-193, to win the one-day PBA Midwest/Central Region Park Lanes Senior Open sponsored by Allstate Insurance in Loves Park, Ill., on July 2. Parks won his eighth PBA Senior Regional title and $1,700.

In the PBA South Region, 2011 Dick Weber PBA Playoffs champion Dick Allen (right) of Columbia, S.C., posted a 7-1 match play record and a 21-game total of 4,863 pins, including match play bonus pins, to win the $2,000 first prize in the Gastonia Open at George Pappas Liberty Lanes in Gastonia, N.C., on July 3 by 319 pins over Kip Roberts of Glenallen, Va. It was Allen's 10th PBA Regional victory.

A week earlier, Sean Swanson of Springfield, Mo., dominated the field to win his 17th PBA Regional title and $3,000 in the inaugural PBA Southwest Region Greater Little Rock Open at Allfam Bowling Center in Cabot, Ark., on June 26. Swanson went undefeated in the 10-game match play finals, defeating runner-up Steve Stanton of Fort Smith, Ark., by 375 pins.

In Manalapan, N.J., Gary Shultis of Levittown, N.Y. (left with GM Kathy Kubanik), defeated Sam Maccarone of Sewell, N.J., 197-179, to win the PBA East Region Knob Hill Senior Open at Knob Hill Country Lanes on June 26. The win was Shultis' 18th career regional. He earned $1,500.

In Orland Park, Ill., Marc Lineberry of Commanche, Iowa, and Kenny Parks of Hammond, Ind., were winners in the joint two-day PBA Midwest/Central Region Orland Bowl Senior Open 1 and 2 sponsored by Allstate at Orland Bowl on June 25 and 26.

Lineberry defeated Dale Traber of Cedarburg, Wis., 233-204, to win Saturday's $1,200 first prize and his fifth career Regional title while Parks topped Mike Truitt of Orland Park, Ill., 183-170, in Sunday's finale, also earning $1,200 and his seventh PBA Senior Regional title.

In Molalla, Ore., Chris Warren (right) of Grants Pass, Ore., continued to tear up the PBA Northwest Region, defeating Rick Francis of Linden, Calif., 180-167, to win the General Distributors presented by Molalla Communications Open at Molalla Bowl, Molalla, Ore., on June 25. Along with a $1,500 check, Warren picked up his 31st PBA Regional title.

GEICO PBA Team Shootout re-broadcasts begin Saturday on ESPN2

In case you missed the original telecasts on ESPN, the entire GEICO PBA Team Shootout series will be re-broadcast on ESPN2. Multiple half-hour shows will air on Saturday, July 9 at 1 p.m.; Sunday, July 17 at 1 p.m.; Saturday, July 23 at noon; Sunday, July 24 at 1:30 p.m.; Sunday, July 31 at 2 p.m., and Saturday, Aug. 6 at 1 p.m. All times are Eastern.

 

Voting for "Best Bowler ESPY" continues through July 9

Reigning PBA Player of the Year Mika Koivuniemi, PBA Triple Crown winner Chris Barnes, Bill O'Neill and Jason Belmonte are candidates selected by ESPN to contend for the 2011 "Best Bowler ESPY." Fan voting is underway and will continue through 11:59 p.m. ET on July 9 at espn.com/espys.

To vote, click on the "click to get started" tab on the ESPYs homepage, then click on the "vote by category" tab and scroll down the list to locate the "Best Bowler" category. Click on the image of the player to vote. The winners will be announced during the 18th annual ESPYs, live on ESPN at 6 p.m. ET on July 13 from the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles.

Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour exempt player Brian Kretzer (pictured left) will be inducted into the Greater Dayton (Ohio) USBC Hall of Fame Aug. 2.

Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour exempt player Kelly Kulick of Union, N.J., has been elected to the United States Bowling Congress Board of Directors as an athlete representative. The other four athlete representatives on the USBC Board are newly re-elected Tony Manna of Omaha; PBA members Andrew Cain of Phoenix and Wendy Macpherson of Henderson, Nev., and Vernon Peterson of Lake Wales, Fla.

PBA Media Relations representative Bill Vint of East Troy, Wis., also was elected to the USBC Board while BPAA Past-President and PBA Senior member Jim Sturm of Dunbar, W.Va., was elected to a one-year term as USBC President, effective Aug. 1.

The Korean Daejeon International Open has been added to the World Tenpin Bowling Association's 2011 World Bowling Tour schedule. The event will be held Aug. 21-26 at Daejeon World Cup Bowling Center in Deajeon, Korea, and will feature a prize fund of nearly $185,000 with roughly $46,000 to the winner.

The top three men and three men in the eight-event international series will advance to the World Bowling Tour Finals presented by the PBA during the PBA World Series of Bowling where they will compete for a total of $40,000. Men's leaders after five events are Mika Koivuniemi, Sean Rash and Osku Palermaa. Women's leaders are Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, Kelly Kulick and Sweden's Nina Flack.

Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour exempt player Ronnie Russell (right) defeated Austria's Thomas Gross, 254-248, to win the inaugural Brunswick Italia Challenge at Red & Black Bowling in Asti, Italy, and an $11,500 first prize, in late June. Gross defeated fellow PBA Tour exempt player Chris Loschetter, 231-216, in the semifinal round.
