Cardona, Palermaa, Spil add their names to the leaderboard in Madrid

2016EBT08JeroenvanGeel2.jpg2016EBT08OskuPalermaa.jpgAlvar Cardona Jr. of Spain, Finland’s Osku Palermaa and Johnny Spil Jr., Netherlands led the three qualifying squads Friday at Bowling Chamartín in Madrid, Spain, and moved into the top 10 in the overall standings at the European Bowling Tour’s Brunswick Madrid Challenge.

Jeroen van Geel (left), Netherlands, continued to lead the 176 players from 23 countries with 1516 and an average of 252.67 for six games.

Cardona (pictured above) rolled games of 247, 255, 258, 268, 223 and 216, an average of 244.50, in squad 21 to position himself in sixth place with 1467 and to push back Palermaa (above right) to seventh place. The Finnish two-hander, who is second on the all-time EBT title list with 13 titles, had 1466 in squad 20, including 234, 267, 229, 245, 234 and 257 (244.33).

2016EBT08JohnnySpil.jpg2015EBT16JennyWegner.jpgSpil finished squad 22 on Friday night with his high game of 268 to take over 9th place with 1457 (242.83). The Dutchman started his series with 248, 247, 238, 259 and 197.

2015 EBT point ranking leader Jenny Wegner (right) of Sweden is the best of 26 women in 29th place with 1394 total, including handicap and one of four 300 games in the tournament so far. Her teammate on the Swedish national team and runner-up in the 2015 ranking, Ida Andersson, is the only other woman in the top 38 in 31st place with 1386.

With four more squads to go on Saturday, Timmy Fredriksson of Sweden is “on the bubble” in 38th place with 1368 and an average of 228.

Qualifying continues on Saturday, July 9, with squads 23-26 scheduled to start at 9 a.m., 1, 5 and 9 p.m. Central European Summer Time (CEST) and concludes with the Desperado Squad slated for half past Midnight.

2016BrunswickMadridChallengeLogo_small.jpgThe IV Brunswick Madrid Challenge is the 8th stop of the 2016 European Bowling Tour season and the third out of four EBT “Silver” tournaments this season. The tournament will be held from July 2-10 at 20-lane Bowling Chamartín in Madrid, Spain.

Players will compete for total prize money of 40.250 Euro with 6.000 Euro going to the winner, 3.000 to the runner-up and 2.000 to the third place finisher. Last-to-cash payout (50th place) is 300 Euro.

Qualifying got underway on Saturday, July 2, and runs through Saturday, July 9, with the last squad 26 to start at 9 p.m. Central European Summer Time (CEST). Qualifying wraps up with the Desperado Squad slated for half past Midnight. The qualifying winner earns a 750 Euro bonus.

Women receive 8 pins handicap each game (maximum score is 300), a standard on the European Bowling Tour. The top two women in qualifying (before Desperado Squad) earn 750 and 500 Euro, respectively.

Total 50 players qualify for the finals on Sunday, July 10 – the top 38 players from the overall qualifying standings, the top three players from the combined standings of squads 1-8 and the top 5 of squads 9-12 who were not among the top 38, and the top four players of the Desperado Squad. The top 10 qualifiers receive two byes while qualifiers 11-20 get a first-round bye.

The first three rounds of the finals feature four games from scratch, which trim the field to 30, 20 and then 10 players who advance to another four-game round with the Round 3 total being carried forward.

The top 3 with the highest eight-game total advance to the stepladder finals. The No. 2 and 3 seeds open the action with a one-game shootout match. The winner goes against the No. 1 seed for the title and 6.000 Euro first prize.

2016EBTLogo_small.jpgThe 2016 European Bowling Tour currently consists of 16 tournaments in 11 countries featuring three “Platinum” events, three “Gold”, four “Silver” and six “Satellite” events. All tournaments together offer total prize fund of roughly 850.000 Euro.

The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event receive ranking points. Those points will be tabulated throughout the season to determine the top 12 men and top 12 women, who will be eligible to compete in the 10th EBT Masters May 29, 2017, at Lovvang Bowling Center in Aalborg, Denmark.

2016 Brunswick Madrid Challenge – Standings after Qualifying Squad 22/26

Top 38 players from the overall qualifying standings, top three players from the combined standings of squads 1-8 (places 39-41) and top 5 of squads 9-12 (places 42-46) who are not among the top 38, and top four players of the Desperado Squad (places 47-50) will advance to Sunday’s finals.
