French Gaëtan Mouveroux raises bar at Rome Open All4bowling

Gaëtan Mouveroux of France averaged 224.17 at Brunswick Bowling in Rome, Italy, Wednesday to take a commanding lead in the Rome Open All4bowling as the qualifying of the European Bowling Tour satellite event has surpassed the halfway mark.

Mouveroux (featured photo and right), who has won his first EBT title in the Hammer Bronzen Schietspoel Tournament 2018 in April, rolled games of 226, 200, 225, 246, 191 and 257 to lead squad 9 of 18 with 1345 and an average of 224.17.

Mouveroux, became the first player in the 230-player field nine countries who surpassed the 1300-mark, overtook previous leader, Andrea Moro (left) of Italy, by 110 pins. Moro and his compatriot Ricky Diaz, slipped to second and third place with 1235.

Italians Piearpaolo De Filippi (right; 1231) and Ardemio Chiarvesio (1212) are the only other competitors who reached the 1200-plateau (200 average).

Mouveroux out averaged his fellow countryman Julien Sermand (left) by more than 27 pins in squad 9. Sermand was 166 pins back in second place with 1179 and improved his high score by 18 pins as he led squad 10 Wednesday evening with 1196, including a high game of 258, to finish the fifth day of qualifying in seventh place.

Mouveroux, De Filippi, Chiarvesio, Sermand and 9th place Antonio Maddaloni (1183) of Italy, who led the “early bird” squads 5 to 10, will earn automatic berths into Sunday’s finals in case they will not finish qualifying in the top 32.

Natascha Kögler of Germany, who was third in squad 9 with 1153, including women’s handicap, is just the second woman in the top 32 in 20th place. Annalisa Balzano (right) is the best of 40 women in the field with 1172, good for 13th place overall.

Gianluca De Angelis from Italy currently holds the 32nd and last place to advance from the qualifying standings with 1123 and an average of 187.17.

Qualifying continues on Thursday, September 13, with squads 11, 12 & 13 scheduled to start at 1, 5 and 9 p.m. Central European Summer Time (CEST).

The Rome Open All4bowling, formerly known as Roma International in 2010 and 2011, is the 11th and penultimate stop of the 2018 season and the third of three EBT “Satellite” tournaments this season, the lowest of the five EBT categories (satellite, bronze, silver, gold and platinum). The tournament will be held from September 8-16 at 24-lane Brunswick Bowling in Rome, Italy.

Players compete for total prize money of 25.200 Euro with 4.500 Euro going to the winner, 2.500 Euro to the runner-up and 1.200 Euro apiece to the third and fourth place finishers. Low to cash is 44th place worth 250 Euro.

In addition to the regular prize fund, there is a so called “300 Jackpot” competition – for anybody without an additional fee – which includes all games played in qualifying and Desperado Squad. At stake is a 2.000 Euro prize for the athlete with the lone perfect game or, if there is more than one perfecto, for the athlete who is highest ranked in the overall qualifying standings among those who achieved perfection.

Qualifying (six games, unlimited re-entries) gets underway on Saturday, September 8, and concludes Saturday, Sept. 15 at 4 p.m. Central European Summer Time (CEST) with squad 19, followed by the one-game Desperado Squad scheduled to start a 7.30 p.m.

Women receive 8 pins handicap each game, an equality handicap provided to women in all EBT events. Maximum score is 300.

Total 44 players, including the top 32, the top three players from squads 1-4 and the top five from squads 5-10 who are not among the top 32, plus the top 4 of the Desperado Squad, advance to the finals on Sunday, September 16.

Qualifiers 1-8 earn three byes, qualifiers 9-16 receive two byes and qualifiers 17-24 get a first-round bye. The remaining 20 players advance to the first of four three-game rounds which will trim the field to 32, 24, 18 and then eight players. The remaining eight players will determine the champion in four one-game rounds.

The 2018 European Bowling Tour features 12 tournaments in 10 countries including two “platinum”, two “gold”, three “silver”, two “bronze” and three “satellite” events, which offer total prize fund of roughly 625.000 Euro.

The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event receive ranking points. Those points will be tabulated throughout the season to determine the top 8 men and top 8 women, who will be eligible to compete in the 12th EBT Masters July 8, 2019 at Bowling Chamartín in Madrid, Spain.
