Masters concludes 16th Asian School Championships

2015ASCBoysMastersTop3.jpg2015ASCBoysMastersKuekQiEn2.jpgSingapore’s Kuek Qi En and Kim Dong Yo of Korea won the gold medals in the boys’ and girls’ Masters competition, which concluded the NTGCC 16th Asian School Tenpin Bowling Championships Friday at SCAA bowling center in Hong Kong, China.

It was the first gold medal for Singapore in the Championships and the third for Kim, who also won the titles in Singles and in the four-player Team event.

Both players took different routes to win the title. Kuek (right) averaged over 230 to lead the boys’ round robin match play and to take the No. 1 seed for the three-player stepladder finals.

2015ASCBoysMastersJassem AlMuraikhi.jpg2015ASCBoysMastersIvanMalig.jpgIn the opening one-game match, third-seeded Ivan Malig (left), Philippines, ousted No. 2 Jassem Al-Muraikhi (right) of Qatar, 216-183, to set up the title match against Kuek. The gold medal match consisted of two games, with total pins determining the winner.

Kuek started out the match commandingly, by connecting for the first eight strikes to take an insurmountable 83-pin lead after the first game, 268-185. The Singaporean won the second game by 20 pins (203-183) to wrap up the title, 471-368.

Malig earned his second silver medal after the Team event and Al-Muraikhi added a second bronze medal to the bronze he won in Doubles.

2015ASCGirlsMastersTop3.jpg2015ASCGirlsMastersKimDongYo2.jpgOn girl’s side, Kim Dong Yo (right) barely made the cut to the stepladder finals, taking the third place and last place, 199 pins behind leader Nora Lyana Natasia of Malaysia and mere 17 pins ahead of All-Events champion Kim Jin Ju, Korea.

In the opening match, Kim flew past second-seeded Shion Izumune (below left), Japan, 243-193. Izumune, who has won two gold and two silver medals in the same bowling center at the World Youth Championships last year, received the bronze medal.

2015ASCGirlsMastersShionIzumune.jpg2015ASCGirlsMastersNora LyanaNatasia2.jpgKim carried the momentum into the two-game title match, defeating Natasia (right) in the first game, 215-190, to take a 25-pin lead into the second game. Natasia, who averaged over 220 for 15 match play games and one game position round, had a chance to win the second game by 26 pins with three strikes in the last frame, but big split on her first ball sealed her fate.

Both players tied the second game at 196, which handed the match and the gold medal to the Korean, 411-386. Natasia earned her third silver medal after Team and All-Events. She also took home a bronze medal in Singles.

Kim’s victory gave the Korean girls a clean sweep of the gold medals and also the overall lead in the medal tally with seven gold, one silver and three bronze. Japan topped the boys’ medal tally with two gold and two silver, just ahead of Korea with two gold and two bronze medals.

2015ASCPoster.jpgThe 16th Asian School Tenpin Bowling Championships, which ran from July 25-31, 2015 on 40-lanes at the South China Athletic Association Bowling Center in Hong Kong, China, drew 76 boys and 58 girls born on or after January 1, 1997, representing 13 member countries of the Asian Bowling Federation (ABF).

Each federation was allowed to send a maximum of two boys’ and two girls’ teams with each team consisting of maximum four boys or four girls, who competed for medals in Singles, Doubles, Teams, All-Event and Masters.
