The United States Bowling Congress Women’s Championships has helped Alicia Straka of Bridgewater, New Jersey, travel across the country and build countless friendships, and her trek in 2016 gave her another memory to cherish as she celebrated her 50th tournament appearance June 19.

The 89-year-old right-hander began her journey at the 1966 event in New Orleans, and she has made an annual appearance at the tournament each year since 1984. Straka was awarded a plaque, chevron and pendant to commemorate the milestone at the South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas.

“I had this angst and anticipation going in because I hoped I would make it,” said Straka, who rolled sets of 384 in doubles, 374 in singles and 314 in team for a 1,072 all-events total in 2016. “When you’re 89 years old, every day is a blessing. I’m looking forward to Baton Rouge. Last time we were there, we had a great time.”

Four other competitors joined Straka in reaching the 50-year plateau at the 2016 USBC Women’s Championships, including Alyce Hansen of Port Ludlow, Washington, Martha Johnson of Johnson City, Tennessee, Linda Prattini of New Orleans and Jelemia Sanders of Richmond, Kentucky.

Utah bowler moves into Ruby All-Events lead in Las Vegas

Two lead changes in Ruby All-Events occurred this week at the South Point Bowling Plaza, with Rhonda Greenhalgh of West Valley City, Utah, emerging at the top of the standings after finishing with a 1,879 total June 22.

Greenhalgh used sets of 653 in singles, 618 in team and 608 in doubles to reach her leading score. She passed Julie Jaques of Henderson, Nevada, who posted a 1,862 total on June 19. Rhonda Ybarra of Chicago started the week in the lead with 1,834.

Ruby All-Events features bowlers with entering averages of 175-189.

A look ahead

Less than three weeks remain before the 2016 USBC Women’s Championships concludes its 94-day run at the South Point Bowling Plaza on July 11. The 2016 event kicked off April 9.

This year marked the tournament’s 97th edition, with a tradition that began in 1916.
