New Jersey’s Justin Sloan rolls first perfect game at USBC Mixed

Justin Sloan of Saddle Brook, New Jersey, etched his name into the record books June 27 by becoming the first player to roll a perfect game at the United States Bowling Congress Mixed.

The 32-year-old right-hander tossed 12 consecutive strikes during his second game of doubles at the South Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas, home of doubles and singles at the 2016 USBC Mixed. The team event is being contested at the 60-lane South Point Bowling Plaza.

Although Sloan already was excited to add a 300 game on the national stage to his resume, the news of becoming the first player in the event’s two-year history alongside the USBC Women’s Championships to accomplish the feat was an added and unexpected bonus.

“This definitely is ranking No. 1 right now in my mind,” said Sloan, who added games of 269 and 189 for a 758 series. “It’s one of those check marks you want. I didn’t think I was the first. I thought for sure that someone would have shot one last year, but I’ll definitely take it. It’s even better than I thought.”

Several close calls highlight week at 2016 USBC Women’s Championships

Several competitors made runs at the top of the leaderboard this week at the 2016 United States Bowling Congress Women’s Championships.

Sharon Westerhold of La Habra, California, used a run in Ruby Singles to add her name to the top five in two events at the South Point Bowling Plaza. Westerhold rolled games of 205, 234 and 216 for a 655 series to move into fourth place in Ruby Singles, and she added 649 in team and 520 in doubles for a 1,824 all-events tally, which is good for fourth place in Ruby All-Events.

Ruby Singles and Ruby All-Events, which consist of bowlers with entering averages of 175-189, are led by Daphne Williams (pictured left) of Mount Vernon, New York (678), and Rhonda Greenhalgh of West Valley City, Utah (1,879), respectively.

Maureen Aranda of Norwalk, California, and Yolanda Williams of Long Beach, California, moved into second place in Sapphire Doubles with a 1,091 total. Williams led the effort with 565, and Aranda added 526.

Sisters Tatiana Montez of Kapolei, Hawaii, and Pua Edayan of Waimanalo, Hawaii, lead Sapphire Doubles with 1,100. The division includes pairs with combined entering averages of 290-319.

Topaz Singles saw two new additions to the top five this week as Carla Houston of San Antonio moved into a tie for second place with a 507 series and Theresa Martin of Hanover, Maryland, took over fourth place with 504.

Sue Browne of Garden City, Michigan, leads Topaz Singles, a division for bowlers with entering averages of 129 and below, with 518.

We Got This! of Aberdeen, Maryland, moved into third place in Emerald Team with games of 666, 663 and 722 for a 2,051 total. Toooo Hot!!! of Rio Rancho, New Mexico (right), leads with 2,115.

Women Who Wine 5 of Chino, California, cracked the top five in Sapphire Team after putting together games of 660, 565 and 620 for a 1,845 total. Wyoming Wild Bunch of Thermopolis, Wyoming, holds the lead with 1,902.

A look ahead

Less than two weeks remain before the 2016 USBC Women’s Championships concludes its 94-day run at the South Point Bowling Plaza. The 2016 event kicked off April 9, and the final competitors will take the lanes for doubles and singles July 11.

This year marked the tournament’s 97th edition, with a tradition that began in 1916.
