In last month’s Suncoast PBA Senior U.S. Open presented by 900 Global, PBA Hall of Famer Norm Duke of Clermont, Fla., dominated qualifying as the tournament leader only to falter in match play eventually finishing 11th.

It’s something the PBA Hall of Famer (pictured above) hopes to avoid in the PBA50 Treasure Island Resort & Casino World Championship presented by Storm.

After Tuesday’s second round bowling on PBA’s 43-foot Chameleon lane condition pattern at Island Xtreme Bowl in Welch, Minn., Duke retained his qualifying lead with a 2,422 10-game pinfall total to lead two-time PBA50 Player of the Year Ron Mohr (left) of Las Vegas, in second with 2,370, and PBA Tour and PBA50 Tour winner Sam Maccarone (right) of Blackwell, N.J., in third with 2,363.

Duke, a 38-time PBA Tour and two-time PBA50 Tour titlist, bowled games of 215, 227, 279, 258 and 228 after a 1,215 pinfall total in Monday’s first round on the Viper lane condition.

“The (Senior) U.S. Open is such that if you don’t have a good look, you’ll pay dearly,” said Duke whose last win on the PBA50 Tour came in the 2014 PBA Senior U.S. Open. “The adjustments you make here aren’t nearly as bold as you would make in the U.S. Open and in the U.S. Open it can get a lot worse before it gets better if you don’t make the right decisions.

“The fact is a nose dive can happen to anyone at any time and it has happened to all of us at one time or another,” Duke added. “On the U.S. Open lane condition, there’s a lot less room for error so you can dig a bigger hole quicker there but it can happen anywhere.”

Heading into Wednesday’s third round, PBA Senior U.S. Open and USBC Senior Masters winner Pete Weber (left) of St. Ann, Mo., is in 14th with a 2,272 pinfall.

The entire field will return for third round qualifying on the Scorpion lane condition Wednesday which will determine the top 24 qualifiers who will advance to World Championship match play on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. CT.

Tuesday’s qualifying also determined the top 24 players who will advance to the Treasure Island Resort & Casino Chameleon championship match play round Thursday at 1 p.m. After Thursday’s match play the top five will advance to the Chameleon stepladder finals on Friday at 3 p.m. which will award a PBA50 regional title to the winner.

Australian standout Andrew Frawley (left) topped Tuesday’s Chameleon round with a 1,268 pinfall on games of 253, 266, 236, 214 and 299.

Rounding out the top five were Brian Kretzer (right), Dayton, Ohio, 1,266; Dale Traber, Cedarburg, Wis., 1,254; Tommy Martin, Olive Branch, Miss., 1,244, and Brian Cooper, Henderson, Nev., 1,233.
