Johnson, New earn 2016 PWBA Player, Rookie of the Year awards

Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., claimed her second consecutive PWBA Player of the Year award while Singapore’s New Hui Fen earned enough competition points to secure 2016 PWBA Rookie of the Year.

Johnson (pictured above), who led the Tour in points, earnings and tied for the lead in championship-round appearances. Johnson became the first player since Wendy Macpherson in 2000 to win the award in consecutive years. She won two events this season, the PWBA Las Vegas Open and her fifth career U.S. Women’s Open title.

New (right) entered the season-ending Smithfield PWBA Tour Championship needing to defeat fellow rookie Jennifer Higgins of Westerville, Ohio, in the opening round of match play and Danielle McEwan of Stony Point, New York, in Round 2, to secure enough points to win the award.

New defeated Higgins, 3-2, and McEwan, 3-1, and went on to win the Smithfield PWBA Tour Championship for her first PWBA title, which also was a major. She is the first international rookie of the year since Australia’s Cara Honeychurch in 2000.

The 2016 Professional Women’s Bowling Association Tour, which was re-launched in 2015 after nearly a dozen years, featured 10 regular-season events, four “majors” and stops from coast to coast.

The 2016 PWBA schedule kicked off April 28 with the PWBA Las Vegas Open at Texas Station and concluded with the Smithfield PWBA Tour Championship finals on September 4 in Midlothian, Virginia.
