Ron Mohr of North Las Vegas, Nevada, has been on a roll and turned that momentum into an opening-round lead Friday at the 2016 International Training and Research Center Super Senior Classic.

The two-time Professional Bowlers Association 50 Tour Player of the Year averaged more than 232 for his eight-game block to finish at the top of the standings at Sam’s Town Bowling Center with a 1,860 total.

The 60-year-old right-hander has led qualifying at the last two PBA50 Tour stops, which included a fourth-place finish Wednesday at the PBA50 Northern California Classic presented by Motiv.

Mohr also found success at Sam’s Town in 2015, helping Team USA to a gold medal in the team event at the World Bowling Senior Championships.

“I’ve been throwing the ball well for a few weeks now,” said Mohr, who owns eight PBA50 titles.

“Today’s performance obviously loosens the arm swing, and with pinfall carrying over, a great start is huge. There are a bunch of great players here this week, so I’m not going to look too far ahead and just keep doing what I’ve been doing.”

Don Blatchford (right) of Santa Monica, California, and Ronald Holt of Upper Marlboro, Maryland, are fourth and fifth with 1,784 and 1,776, respectively.

Defending Super Senior Classic champion Sam Maccarone of Blackwood, New Jersey, is 31st with 1,621.

The field of 126 competitors will return to Sam’s Town for the second round of qualifying Saturday morning, before the field is cut to the top 32 for Sunday’s cashers’ round.

Michael Lucente of Warren, Michigan, who finished fourth at last year’s event, and Gary Johnson of Las Vegas are tied for 32nd after the opening round with 1,617.

All bowlers who advance to the cashers’ round will bowl four additional games starting at 11 a.m. Eastern, which will determine the top five for the stepladder finals, based on the 20-game total pinfall. The winner of the 2016 Super Senior Classic will earn a $6,500 top prize.

The cashers’ round and stepladder finals of the 2016 Super Senior Classic will be broadcast live on BOWL.com’s BowlTV. For more information on the ITRC Super Senior Classic, click here.
