Ryan Lalisang, New Hui Fen win Masters titles at 23rd Asian Championships

Ryan Lalisang of Indonesia and Singapore’s New Hui Fen, who dominated the match play rounds to earn the No. 1 seed for the stepladder finals, finished with big games to end the 23rd Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships with victory in Men’s and Women’s Masters Monday, January 26 at Blu-O Rhythm & Bowl Ratchayothin in Bangkok, Thailand.

Lalisang (pictured left; photos courtesy of TTBA) finished the first game of the men’s championship match over two games total pins with a six-bagger to narrow the gap to Mostafa Al-Mousawi of Kuwait to two pins, 231-241.

The former Asian Games Singles gold medalist started the second game with seven consecutive strikes to shut out his opponent and to cruise to the gold medal with 268-215 and 499-456 overall.

Third-seeded Al-Mousawi ousted No. 2 seed, Hong Hae Sol of Korea in the semifinal match, 209-183, to earn the right to bowl Lalisang for the title. Al-Mousawi took the silver medal and Hong received bronze.

In the women’s title match, tournament leader New Hui Fen lost the first game against reigning World Champion in Masters Son Yun Hee of Korea by 32 pins, 208-240.

The Singaporean, who averaged 236.13 over 16 games round robin match play, started the second game with spare, strike and spare, then reeled off nine consecutive strikes to take the second game by 77 pins, 270-193, and the match, 478-433.

Korea dominated the men’s medal tally with four gold, one silver and three bronze medals and led the women’s medal tally with two gold, three silver and two bronze medals to finish the 23rd Asian Championships atop the overall medal tally with six gold, four silver and five bronze medals.

Other countries earning gold medals were Japan, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.

The 2015 Asian Tenpin Bowling Championships, which were originally scheduled for May 2014, were held from January 15-26 Blu-O Rhythm & Bowl Ratchayothin in Bangkok, Thailand.

201 athletes, 125 men and 76 women, from 22 Asian Bowling Federation (ABF) member federations participated in the 23rd edition of the prestigious event. Each team consisted of maximum six male and six female bowlers. Men and women competed in separate divisions for gold, silver and bronze medals in six disciplines: Singles, Doubles, Trios, five-player Teams, All Events and Masters.

The 23rd Asian Championships was contested on two oil pattern – a 39 foot medium pattern and a 48 foot long pattern, which were conditioned by Kegel.

Singles (six games on long oil) and Doubles (six games on medium oil) were contested on one oil pattern, while Trios and Team featured both oil patterns (three games on each pattern). The players with the highest pinfall total after six games were declared the champions.

The top 3 in All Events (24 games; individual pinfall total in Singles, Doubles, Trios and Team event) received the medals while the top 16 advanced to the Masters finals. The top 3 after two eight-game blocks (first block on medium oil, second block on long oil) determined the champions in a stepladder final.
