Daphne Smith of Simpsonville, South Carolina, had an exciting 24-hour run at the South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas and stepped off the lanes April 15 as the leader in three events at the 2016 United States Bowling Congress Women’s Championships.

The 35-year-old right-hander (pictured) kicked off her second USBC Women’s Championships appearance April 14 by helping Atlanta’s Finest of Lithia Springs, Georgia, into the Diamond Team lead with a 2,534 total, and she continued strong the following day by setting the bar in Diamond Singles (724) and Diamond All-Events (1,957).

Smith’s singles set started with nine consecutive strikes on the way to a 264 game, and she added 226 and 234 to coast into the top spot. She had 655 in team and 578 in doubles to reach her all-events tally.

“We were pretty pumped after taking the lead in team, and it had us feeling really good about doubles and singles because it’s the same pattern,” Smith said.

“From Game 1 to 2 in doubles, I saw the ball start to pick up early, so I tried to make an adjustment with my hand to get the ball to push through and carry, and that created some issues. I tried a different ball, which split a couple of times, before making another ball change to something that cleared a little longer and finished through the pins better.”

Teams in the Diamond Division enter the Women’s Championships with combined averages of 725 and above. Bowlers in Diamond Singles and All-Events have entering averages of 190 and above.

Oregon bowler takes Emerald lead at South Point Bowling Plaza

Teresa Person (pictured above) of Tigard, Oregon, decided her 2016 USBC Women’s Championships appearance was going to be different compared to her previous 12 visits, and now she finds herself leading Emerald Singles.

The 56-year-old right-hander fired games of 228, 230 and 172 to finish with a 630 series April 17, surpassing Diane Brown of Georgetown, Texas, who previously held the top spot with 617.

The big change for Person from previous years was bringing a different demeanor to the lanes. That positive outlook helped her finish the opening game with six consecutive strikes, and she added six more to start Game 2.

Emerald Singles features bowlers with entering averages of 160-174.

Virginia team emerges with Ruby lead at USBC Women’s Championships

A consistent performance helped VA Wildcards of Stafford, Virginia (pictured above), move into the lead in Ruby Team on April 20.

Led by Andrea Sharp‘s 691 set, VA Wildcards rolled games of 722, 747 and 746 for a 2,215 total. Sharp was joined by RoxAnn Artzer-Crowder (576), Wanda Volpp (553) and Rosanne Alwine (395).

A look ahead

The top female bowlers in the world will be making their way to Las Vegas for the Professional Women’s Bowling Association Las Vegas Open at nearby Texas Station starting April 29. The event is the first of the 2016 PWBA season.
