Otalora, Sandelin, Cruz, Doyle earn their third gold medal at Tournament of the Americas

    USA (3), Colombia and Mexico take the gold medals in Mixed Doubles

    Image Manuel Otalora of Colombia, and the United States' Lucy Sandelin, Tyler Cruz and Kamron Doyle picked up their third gold medal in as many events Thursday at the 50th Lee Evans Tournament of the Americas in Tamarac in the Greater Fort Lauderdale, Fla., area.

    Otalora, who won gold in Singles and silver in Mixed Doubles at the 2009 World Games, teamed with Rocio Restrepo to win the Adult division mixed doubles gold medal with a six-game total of 2,623 or an average of 218.33. Colombia has won all five gold medals in the Adult division so far.

    USBC Hall of Famer Lucy Sandelin claimed her third gold medal of the tournament in the Super Senior division, where she teamed with Ed Roberts to beat out their team mates Carol Teel and Jerry Teel for the title by 10 pins, 2,381 (181.42) to 2,371.

    The United States swept the Mixed Doubles gold medals in the youth division. Tyler Cruz joined forces with Holly Harris to win the Junior A division (ages 16-19), with 2,396 (199.67), finishing just 26 pins ahead of Canada.

    Junior Team USA member Kamron Doyle, who holds the record for the youngest bowler to cash in a Professional Bowlers Association event at the age of 14, teamed up with Ashley Dunn to win the Junior B division (ages 12-15) mixed doubles gold medal with 2,407 (200,58).

    Margarita Ramos and Rafael Gomez picked up the third gold medal for Mexico in the Senior division as the duo finished ahead of the two U.S. pairings with 2,330 total (194.17).

    With three events (Singles, Doubles and Mixed Doubles) completed, the U.S. team has won 14 gold medals, Colombia six, Mexico three and the Dominican Republic and Guatemala one each.

    Competition continues Friday with the opening six games of the team event, which is the final event of this year's Tournament of the Americas.

    Image 155 players from 16 countries participate in the 50th Lee Evans Tournament of the Americas, the oldest annual international tournament in the American Zone. The invitational tournament for PABCON (Pan American Bowling Confederation) member federations has five divisions for men and women: Adult, Senior (ages 50-plus for men, 45-plus for women), Super Senior (ages 60-plus for men, 55-plus for women), Junior A (ages 16-19) and Junior B (ages 12-15).

    In each division, one team comprised of two men and two women compete in Singles, Doubles, Mixed Doubles and Mixed Team event throughout the week-long tournament. After 36 games, Individual All-Events and National All-Events champions are recognized.
