Andreev, Starchenkov move to the top of the qualifying leader board in Russian Open

Sergey Andreev and Roman Starchenkov, both of Russia, became the first players in the 2011 Russian Open, who surpassed the 1400-mark, Thursday at Cosmik Belay Dacha in Moscow, Russia.
Russian national team member Andreev rolled games of 225, 257, 278, 215, 234 and 215 in Squad 5 to overtake the lead in the qualifying with 1424 total and an average of 237.33. Starchenkov started his series with a low game of 203 but rebounded with five games between 225 and 257 to move into second place with 1402 (233.67).
Previous leader Sergey Bogachev, Russia, slipped to third place with 1342.
Julia Polyanskaya and Vadim Kalakutok, both Russia, led Squad 6 on Thursday afternoon with 1333 and 1327 to overtake fourth and fifth place, respectively. Polyanskaya is currently the best of 33 women in the 129-player field from only five countries - Belarus, Kazakhstan, Serbia, Ukraine and Russia.
Ukrainian women's national team member Daria Kovaleva is the best of nine foreigners in the Russian Open so far. Kovaleva was next to Andreev and Starchenkov in Squad 5 with 1319 including 48 pins handicap.
Filipp Potorochin fell five spots to seventh place with 1314. Alexander Gurkov, both Russia, was the third-best player in Squad 6 with 1311 to overtake eighth place in the overall qualifying standings. The top 8 will earn one bye for the finals.
As qualifying has reached its halfway point, Grigory Fedorin, Russia, holds the 32nd and last spot to advance with 1218 or an average of 203.
Qualifying continues Friday, Sept. 16 with Squads 7 and 8 scheduled for noon and 4 p.m. Moscow time (CET +2).
The Russian Open, which will be held Sept. 13-18, 2011 at 30-lane Cosmik Belay Dacha in Russia's capital city Moscow, is the 15th stop of the 2011 European Bowling Tour and the fourth out of six EBT "Satellite" tournaments this season.
The tournament offers total prize fund of 25.000 Euro with 5.500 Euro going to the winner and 3.800 Euro to the runner-up, while the third and fourth place finishers will receive 2.500 Euro and 2.000, respectively.
Since the English Open has lost its EBT status, the 2011 European Bowling Tour consists of 20 tour stops in 16 countries including two Platinum, six Gold, six Silver and six Satellite tournaments.
The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event receive ranking points. The winner of a Platinum tournament receives 250 ranking points, the winner of a Gold tournament gets 150, the winner of a Silver tournament earns 100, and the winner of a Satellite tournament such as the Russian Open gets 50 ranking points.
The top 16 men and the top 16 women at the end of the 2011 season qualify for the fifth EBT Masters to be held at Dream-Bowl Palace in Unterföhring near Munich, Germany on April 30 and May 1, 2012. The event will become the first EBT Masters to be contested on single lane condition.
Qualifying of the Russian Open (six-game series, unlimited re-entries) runs from Tuesday, Sept. 13 through Saturday, Sept. 17 with the last Squad 12 scheduled for 9 p.m. local time (CET +2) and concludes with the Desperado Squad slated for 12.30 a.m. on Sunday morning. Women will receive 8 pins handicap each game throughout the entire event, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.
A total of 36 players will advance to the finals on Sunday, Sept. 18 - the top 32 players from the overall qualifying standings plus the top 4 from the Desperado Squad. The top 8 qualifiers earn one bye and will be seeded 1st through 8th in Round Two.
The other 28 players will bowl four games starting from scratch with the top 8 advancing to the second round seeded 9th through 16th.
The remaining 16 players will determine the champion in single-elimination rounds with the two-game total to determine the winner. The highest seeded player bowls the lowest seeded player, the second highest seeded player bowls the second lowest seeded player, etc.
The field will be trimmed to eight and then four players. The winners of the semifinal matches will bowl for the title and the 5.500 top prize while the losers will meet in a two-game roll-off for third and fourth place.
