Guerra, Schmidt to defend their titles at QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup in South Africa

    It's only the second time in the 47-year history that both champions will return

    2010BWCChampionsAumiGuerraMichaelSchmidt2.jpg2011BWCBanner.jpgThe 2010 Bowling World Cup champions, Aumi Guerra of the Dominican Republic and Canadian Michael Schmidt (pictured right, l-r) will defend the women's and men's title at the QubicaAMF Bowling World Cup in Johannesburg, South Africa, from November 30th to December 7th, 2011.

    It marks only the second time in the 47-year history of the event that both reigning champions will return. The other occasion was 1993 when the tournament was also held in Johannesburg.

    The returning champions that year were four-time World up champion Paeng Nepomuceno of the Philippines and Martina Beckel of Germany, who had won the men's and women's title in Le Mans, France, in 1992.

    Only one player in the past 46 years has successfully defended the title - Australia's Jeanette Baker in 1982 in Scheveningen, Netherlands, and 1983 in Mexico City. Mexico.

    Representing the host country of South Africa will be Francois Louw and Marike van der Berg. Louw, a bowling center manager, also competed last year in Toulon, France, where he was involved in a one game roll-off with Biboy Rivera of the Philippines to determine the final player for the round robin.

    Rivera advanced and Louw will be looking improve on his 9th place finish now that the tournament is in his home country. Van der Berg will be making her BWC debut.

    Also making a first appearance in the event will be Haiti represented by Nathalie Sterlin and Jean Stephane.

    Swedish head coach Tomas Leandersson will once again lace up his shoes targeting his second career BWC title after winning in Lisbon, Portugal, in 2000. The former world and European champion has also represented Sweden at the 1992 event in South Africa, where he finished second to winner Rainer Puisis of Germany.

    Joining Leandersson on the men's roster are World Ranking Masters champion Kimmo Lehtonen, Finland, European champion and two-time European Champions Cup winner Thomas Gross, Austria, and World Games and European champion, Steve Thornton from England.

    On the women's side, reigning World Games and ECC champion. Krista Pöllänen of Finland will return as well as last year's Sportswoman of the Tournament, Bigi Manico of Switzerland, who will be making her 10th appearance in the World Cup.

    The resort for this year's event has been confirmed as The Monte Casino Resort. The hotels available are Southern Sun, The Palazzo Hotel and Sun Square.
