Steve Miller wins qualifying in IDM Bucharest International Bowling Open

Steve Miller of England (pictured left) finished the qualifying of the IDM Bucharest International Bowling Open 2011 atop the leaderboard en route to lead a group of 24 men into the finals on Sunday, Nov. 27 at IDM Club in Bucharest, Romania.
Miller posted 1418 in the penultimate qualifying squad 21 including games of 243, 244, 247, 226, 267 and 191, an average of 236.33 for six games. The Englishman beat out Spiros Vlachos (right), Greece, for the top spot by four pins.
Vlachos finished qualifying in second place with 1414 and was followed by compatriots George Stefanidis and Tommy Petersen in third and fourth place with 1393 and 1382, respectively.

25-time PBA champion and PBA Hall of Famer Brian Voss (left), United States, the defending champion, was fifth with 1381. Sixth place belonged to Marco Cesare, Italy, who toppled 1376 pins.
Andreas Karistianos, Cyprus, was the sole player Saturday who cracked the top 8. Karistianos had games of 245, 211, 184, 259, 259 and 208 to lead Squad 20 with 1366, good for seventh place in the overall qualifying standings.
Rounding out the top 8 who earned one bye for the finals was the best Romanian player in the field, Viorel Simut (right), with 1345 and an average of 224.17.
The top 22 including the four leaders of the squads conducted Monday through Thursday (Miller, Vlachos, Simut and 11th place Marius Piticariu, Romania) qualified for the finals. Patsa Epameinondas of Greece took the 22nd and last spot with 1273 or an average of 212.17.
Rounding out the 24 finalists were Epameinondas' compatriots George Venetis and Vassilis Stefopoulos, who advanced through the single-game Desperado Squad with high games of 229 and 226, respectively.
The IDM Bucharest International Bowling Open 2011 will be held from Nov. 21-27 at IDM Club, a 14-laner with Brunswick equipment, in Bucharest, Romania. The tournament offers total prize fund of 15.000 Euro with 2.500 Euro going to the winner.
A total of 24 players from the qualifying (six games; unlimited re-entries) advanced to the finals on Sunday, Nov. 27: the top 18 qualifiers and the top 4 from a separate standing of the squads conducted Nov. 21-24 plus the top 2 of the one-game Desperado Squad. The top 8 players receive one bye.
Qualifiers 9-24 will bowl six games scratch. The top 8 meet the top 8 qualifiers in the second round. Those 16 will bowl another six-game series scratch to cut to the top 8, who will advance to match play finals in best-of-three games format.
