Ildemaro Ruiz leads opening quad in 34th Trofeu Internacional Ciutat de Barcelona

    Venezuelan averages over 237 en route to earn automatic berth into Sunday's finals

    Ruiz, who made three TV shows at the 2011 PBA World Series of Bowling, had games of 228, 238, 255, 219, 245 and 239 to beat out Osku Palermaa (right) of Finland for the top spot by 25 pins. The three-time PBA champion, who won his first major title in the 2011 PBA World Championship, rebounded from a 174 game with 255, 232, 259, 247 and 232 but had to settle for second place with 1399.

    2010EBT12MarcialOvide.jpg2011BucharestMariusPiticariu.jpgMarcial Ovide (left) of Catalonia, one of the seventeen autonomous communities of the Kingdom of Spain, who has won the opening squad last year, was ten pins behind Palermaa in third place with 1389 including a high game of 267. Fourth place belonged to Moises Perez, Catalonia, with 1323 followed by Marius Piticariu (right) of Romnia in fifth place with 1297.

    Cristina Sanz of Catalonia was the best of six women in the 26-player field from eight countries in sixth place with 1288 including 48 pins women's handicap. Qualifying continues Wednesday, July 18, with Squad 2 and 3 scheduled for 5 and 9 p.m. CEST.

    2012EBT12BarcelonaLogo_small.jpg The 34th Trofeu Internacional Ciutat de Barcelona is the 12th stop of the 2012 European Bowling Tour and the third out of four EBT "Gold" tournaments this season.

    The tournament will be held July 17-22 at 14-lane Bowling Pedralbes in Barcelona, Spain and offers total prize fund of 60.000 Euro with 12.000 Euro going to the winner, 6.000 to the runner-up and 3.000 to the third place finisher.

    The tournament features a 41 feet Kegel lane conditioning pattern with 25.85ml volume oil total.

    The qualifying in Barcelona (six-game series, unlimited re-entries) runs from Tuesday July 17 through Saturday, July 21 with the last qualifying squad 15 scheduled for 9 p.m. CEST. Women receive 8 pins handicap each game throughout the entire tournament, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.

    A total of 48 players will advance to the finals on Sunday, July 22 - the top 42 qualifiers including all squad leaders and an additional six women.

    Those 48 players, who carry forward 50 per cent of their qualifying total, bowl four games to cut to the top 24, The top 3 players after another four-game block in Round Two qualify for the stepladder finals.

    The No. 3 seed bowls No. 2 and the winner takes on No. 1 to determine the champion in one-game matches. The stepladder finals will be broadcasted live on Eurosport 2 on Sunday, July 22 at 6.15 p.m. CEST.

    2012EBTLogo_small.jpg The 2012 European Bowling Tour is made up of 21 events in 16 countries including two Platinum, four Gold, eight Silver and seven Satellite tournaments.

    The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event earn ranking points based on how they finish in the event. The winner of a Platinum tournament receives 250 ranking points, the winner of a Gold tournament such as the 34th Trofeu Internacional Ciutat de Barcelona gets 150, the winner of a Silver tournament earns 100, and the winner of a Satellite tournament gets 50 ranking points.

    Those points will be tabulated throughout the season to determine the top 16 men and top 16 women who will compete in the sixth EBT Masters in Bratislava, Slovakia in Sept. 2013.
