Alena Korobkova sets the pace as Squads 1 & 2 have completed the Preliminaries

    Russian averages over 224 for 12 games to sit atop the leaderboard heading into the final day of qualifying at the World Singles Championships; six players of Squad 1 among the top 8

    2012WSCAlenaKorobkova.jpg2012WSCClaraGuerrero.jpgAlena Korobkova (pictured left) of Russia averaged over 220 in the second block of qualifying to take the lead at the World Singles Championships in Cyprus as Squads 1 & 2 have completed their 12-game preliminaries at Galactica Bowling Center in Limassol.

    Korobkova, who led the squads after the first block with 1370 six-game total, added 1321 in Squad 1 on Saturday afternoon to finish the third day of qualifying atop the leaderboard with 2691 total and an average of 224.25.

    Two-time world champion Clara Juliana Guerrero (above right) of Colombia posted the second-highest series of the day (1390) to jump into second place with 2623 (218.58). Former World Ranking Masters champion Britt Brøndsted (below left) of Denmark toppled 1312 pins today to move into third place with 2583.

    Zetter, who was in 12th position after squads 1 & 2 had completed the first block, leaped eight spots thanks to games of 257, 258, 235, 235, 222 and a low game of 189 to lose out the set.

    Next were another two players of Squad 1, Daria Kovalova of Ukraine in fifth place with 2555 and 2005 World Champion in Singles, Esther Cheah of Malaysia in sixth place with 2530.

Rounding out the top 8, who will receive one bye for the finals, was World Games champion Krista Pöllänen (right) of Finland with 2496 or an average of 208.

    Kelly Kulick, United States, who led the 57-player women's division after the first block with 1373 (228.83) and her compatriot, 2007 World Champion in Singles Shannon O'Keefe, need 1319 and 1329 series, respectively, to overtake Korobkova en route to earn the No. 1 seed for the finals.

    The U.S. stars will take to the lanes Sunday when the 34 players of 4, 5 (O'Keefe) and 3 (Kulick) will complete preliminaries.

    All 57 women from 33 countries bowl 12 games of qualifying on the 41 feet WTBA Montreal oil pattern (Lane Map Guide) before the cut to the top 24 players, who advance to the finals Sept. 24 and 25.
