Norwegian internationals set the tone in Squad 11 at Norwegian Open 2012

    Svein Ã…ke Ek, Fredrik Tjernes move into the top 10; another two players make the top 36; cut for 36th place is now 1274 (212.33)

    2012EBT17SveinAkeEk.jpg2012EBT17FredrikTjernes.jpg Norwegian national team members Svein Ã…ke Ek (pictured left) and Fredrik Tjernes (right) posted 1378 and 1374 series in the 11th qualifying squad of the Norwegian Open to jump into sixth and ninth place in the overall standings Friday evening at Veitvet Bowling Center in Oslo.

    The former team mates on the Norwegian Youth national team battled each other on lanes 11 and 12 in the last game. Ek, European Champion in Trios and the 2010 European Champions Cup winner, used high games of 279 and 268 to hold a 14-pin lead over Tjernes.

    Tjernes led by ten pins heading into the last two frames and struck out for 225. Ek countered with four strikes for 215 to beat his team mate by four pins.

Spacey also has the tournament's lone 300 game so far.

    Mikael Roos of Sweden remained in second place with 1423 followed by compatriot Peter Hellström in third place with 1401. Places four and five belonged to Norwegian national team players Tore Torgersen (1398) and Bjørn Einar Rudshagen (right, 1383).

Her team mate, Joline Persson-Planefors (right), a two-time European champion and the 2011 European Bowling Tour women's point ranking leader, remained the best of 22 women in the 151-player field from seven countries in 14th place with 1338.

    Christian Karlsson of Sweden was next with 1298 but sits in 13th place with his 1349 high series. Arnar David Jonsson, Norway, was the last to move above the cut line with 1277, good for 34th place.

    Swede Jörgen Andersson is the new "man on the bubble" in 36th place with 1274 and an average of 212.33.

Her last game of 267 scratch, however, gives her lead in the so called "Turbo 2", the highest sixth game of all players outside the top 36.

    Norwegian youth national team member Andreas Skoglund (right) led Squad 11 after three games of 212, 278 and 212 with 702 but closed out with three consecutive sub-par games to settle for 57th place with 1234.

    Qualifying continues Friday, Oct. 12 with Squad 12 scheduled for 9 p.m. CEST.

    2012NorwegianOpenLogo.jpg The Norwegian Open 2012 by Brunswick, which will be held from Oct. 5-14 at 26-lane Veitvet Bowling Center in Oslo, Norway, is the 17th event of the 2012 European Bowling Tour and the sixth out of seven EBT "Satellite" tournaments this season.

    Players will compete for an increased total prize fund of approx. 25.700 Euro (194.000 Norwegian Kronor). The eventual winner will receive the 3.980 € top prize (30.000 NOK), the runner-up earns 2.650 (20.000 NOK) and the third finisher get 1.990 Euro (15.000 NOK), respectively.

    The qualifying of the Norwegian Open runs from Friday, Oct. 5 through Saturday, Oct. 13 and concludes with Squad 16 scheduled for 9 p.m. local time (CEST). Women receive 8 pins handicap each game, a standard on the European Bowling Tour

    A total of 40 players will qualify for the finals on Sunday, Oct. 14:
    • the top 36 players from the overall qualifying standings
    • two players from a separate leaderboard of Squad 1-6, who are not among the top 36
    • and one player each from the Turbo 1 and 2 list (highest score in qualifying game 5 and 6, respectively; separate fee necessary).

    The top 8 qualifiers receive three byes, players in 9th through 16th place earn two byes and places 17-24 bypass the first round of the finals. The remaining 16 players will start the finals which consist of five three-game rounds.

    Each of the first four rounds starts at scratch with the top eight players advancing while players in 9th through 16th place are eliminated. The field will be trimmed to 32, 24, 16 and then eight players, who will determine the champion in a final three-game round with the pinfall from Round 4 carried over.

    The player with the highest six-game total in Round 4 and 5 will earn the title, 50 ranking points and the 30.000 NOK top prize.

    Bowlingdigital will cover the Norwegian Open 2012 live from Veitvet Bowling Center in Oslo with stories and results after each round. Live coverage commences Oct. 11 with qualifying Squad 7 all the way through to the finals on Sunday, Oct. 14.

    2012EBTLogo_small.jpg The 2012 European Bowling Tour is made up of 19 events in 16 countries including two Platinum, four Gold, six Silver and seven Satellite tournaments.

    The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event earn ranking points based on how they finish in the event. The winner of a Platinum tournament receives 250 ranking points, the winner of a Gold tournament gets 150, the winner of a Silver tournament earns 100, and the winner of a Satellite tournament such as the Norwegian Open gets 50 ranking points.

    Those points will be tabulated throughout the season to determine the top 16 men and top 16 women who will compete in the sixth EBT Masters in Bratislava, Slovakia in Sept. 2013.
