Hansen, Barrett, Mortensen overtake lead in Hammer Bronzen Schietspoel Tournament

    Dane Carsten Warming Hansen averages 249 to pace the 130-player field from 12 countries with 1494 total; cut for 36th place raises by 38 pins on Thursday to 1280 (213.33 average)

    2013EBT02CarstenWarmingHansen.jpgDanes Carsten Warming Hansen, Jimmy Mortensen and Dominic Barrett of England overtook the lead in the qualifying of the Hammer Bronzen Schietspoel Tournament 2013 Thursday at Dolfijn Bowling Tilburg in Tilburg, Netherlands.

    Hansen (pictured left) got off to a great start and sprung into the top spot in Squad 6 with 1494 pinfall and an average of 249. The Dane started with 268, 246, 235, 258 and the tournament high game of 290 before he finished with a low game of 197 to miss the first 1500-series of the tournament by six pins.

    201213PBADominicBarrett.jpg2012EBT04JimmyMortensen.jpgBarrett (left), who won the European Bowling Tour men's point ranking in the 2010 and 2012 seasons, started the seventh qualifying squad 7 with solid 222 and 205 before he closed out with 257, 247, and back-to-back 258. The PBA champion jumped into second place with 1447 and an average of 241.17.

    Another five players of Squad 6 averaged over 225 to position themselves atop the 130-player leaderboard. Hansen's compatriot Jimmy Mortensen (right) finished his series with 246, 257 and 264 to leap into third place with 1436.

    Johnny Spil, Netherlands, was the top local bowler Thursday with 1382 to move into sixth place. Thomas Larsen, Denmark, had a 1369 series including a high game of 276, good for 11th place. Lisanne Breeschoten, Netherlands, checked in with 1360 including 48 pins handicap and remained the top Dutch bowler in fifth place with her 1390 high series. Mattias Nilsson of Sweden used a pair of 250-plus games for 1351 to take 16th place.

Sascha Wedel (left) of Denmark topped Squad 8 on Thursday evening with 1316 including handicap to overtake 20th place.

    Seven of the 26 women in the field are among the top 36 as qualifying has surpassed the halfway point. Currently holding the 36th and last spot to advance is two-time EBT women's point ranking champion, Bettina Lund (right), Denmark, who has totaled 1280.

    Qualifying continues Friday, February 8, with Squads 9-11 at noon, 4 and 8 p.m. CET.

    The Hammer Bronzen Schietspoel Tournament 2013 is the second stop of the 2013 European Bowling Tour and the first of five EBT "Silver" tournaments this season. The tournament will be held from Sunday Feb. 3 through Sunday Feb. 10, 2013 at 20-lane Dolfijn Bowling in Tilburg, Netherlands.

    Players will compete for total prize money of 51.500 Euro with 8.000 Euro going to the winner, 5.000 to the runner-up and 3.000 and 2.000 to third and fourth place finishers, respectively.

    Once again the HBS Tournament will be contested on dual lane condition. In 2013, one lane is dressed with a 35 ft. "short" pattern and the other lane dressed with a 40 ft. "medium" pattern.

    Qualifying runs through Saturday Feb. 9 with the final qualifying Squad 14 scheduled for 6 p.m., followed by the ultimate one-game Desperado Squad slated for 9.30 p.m. Women receive 8 pins handicap each game, a standard on the European Bowling Tour.

    A total of 46 players - the top 36 qualifiers, the top 4 from the Desperado Squad and the top 6 from a separate leaderboard of Squads 1-4 conducted Feb. 3-5 - will advance to the finals on Sunday, Feb. 10. The top 6 qualifiers will receive one bye.

    Players ranked 7 to 46 will bowl four games with the top 18 players joining the top six qualifiers in the so called group finals. Those 24 players will be divided into six groups of four players each for the first of four eliminator rounds.

    All four players will bowl a two-game match with the two lowest scoring players eliminated. The two highest scoring players advance to the next round (in the first round four "lucky losers" also advance).

    The field will be cut to 16, eight and then four players who will bowl a final two-game round to determine the champion.
