Davide Spagnoli, Mike Machuga take the lead at Brunswick Italia Challenge in Squads 8 & 9

    Italian Spagnoli rolls the tournament's first 300 game on his way the field-best 1363 series; PBA champion Machuga is 39 pins behind in second place; cut for 36th place is up to 1172 (194.33 average)

    Davide Spagnoli of Italy rattled off twelve consecutive strikes in the fifth game of Squad 9 Tuesday evening at Bowling Red & Black in Asti, Italy en route to overtake the qualifying lead at the Brunswick Italia Challenge.

    Spagnoli's six-game series was a roller coaster ride including games of 248, 187, 246, 171, 300 and 211 for 1363 and an average of 227.17. The owner of the tournament's lone perfect game topped his nearest competitor in the squad, 13th place Nicola Galeone of Italy (1259), by more than 100 pins.

    201213PBAMikeMachuga.jpg2013EBT04GiannisStathatos2.jpgTwo-time PBA champion Mike Machuga (pictured left), United States, who took the tournament lead in Squad 8 earlier on Tuesday with 1314 including an opening three-game series of 771 (248, 278, 245), finished day four qualifying in second place.

    Previous leaders Marco Zorzan and Marco Boccato slipped to third and fourth place, respectively, with 1313 and 1311. Greek national team member Giannis Stathatos (right), who was second to Machuga in Squad 8 and tied Boccato at 1311, was seeded fifth due to the lower last game.

    Andrea Spadavecchia was the fourth player on Tuesday who cracked the top 10, finishing Squad 8 with 1291 pinfall, good for ninth place overall.

    Pamela Provenzi of Italy remained the best of eleven women in the 112-player field from 11 countries in 20th place with 1225 including 48 pins women's handicap. The only other woman in the top 36 is Jenny Wegner of Sweden, who currently holds the 36th and last place to qualify directly for the finals with 1172 or an average of 194.33 including handicap.

    Qualifying continues Wednesday, July 3, with Squads 10 & 11 scheduled for 4 and 8 p.m. CEST.

    2012BrunswickItaliaChallengeLogo_small.jpg The 2013 Brunswick Italia Challenge is the 9th stop of the 2013 European Bowling Tour and the fourth and last EBT "Silver" tournaments this season. The tournament will be held from June 9 through July 7 at 24-lane Bowling Red & Black in Asti, Italy.

    The BIC offers total prize fund of 51.600 Euro with 10.000 Euro going to the winner, 5.000 Euro to the runner-up and 3.000 Euro to the third place finisher.

    Qualifying of the Italia Challenge 2013 (six-game series, unlimited re-entries) runs from Saturday, June 29 through Saturday, July 6, with the last qualifying squad 23 scheduled for 9 p.m. CEST.

    Qualifying concludes with the one-game Desperado Squad slated for early Sunday morning 12.30 a.m. Women receive 8 pins handicap each game throughout the entire tournament, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.

    A total of 52 players advance to the finals including the top 36 qualifiers, six players each from a separate leaderboard of the squads contested June 29 & 30 and July 1 thru 3, one player each from Turbo game 5 and 6 (extra entry fee) and the top 2 players of the Desperado Squad. The top 8 qualifiers will receive two byes.

    Two four-game rounds will trim the field to 24 and then 8 players, who will meet the top eight qualifiers in eliminator-format rounds which will feature three two-game rounds.

    All four players bowl the opening two-game series, with the lowest-scoring player being eliminated. In the two rounds to follow, the same "low man out" format applies. The four group winners will bowl for the title and a 10.000 Euro first prize in three games round robin match play (20 bonus per win, 10 for a tie, 10 bonus for each game over 250).

    2013EBTLogo_small.jpg The 2013 European Bowling Tour consists of 19 tournaments in 13 countries including two Platinum, six Gold, four Silver and seven Satellite events.

    The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event earn ranking points based on how they finish. The winner of a Platinum tournament receives 250 ranking points, the winner of a Gold tournament gets 150, the winner of a Silver tournament such as the Italia Challenge earns 100, and the winner of a Satellite tournament gets 50 ranking points.

    Points are tabulated throughout the season and the top 12 men and the top 12 women qualify for the seventh EBT Masters to be held March 3, 2014 at Dolfijn Bowling in Tilburg, Netherlands immediately following the EBT Hammer Bronzen Schietspoel Tournament 2014.

The top 8 qualifiers will receive two byes.
