Mika Koivuniemi takes over pole position in qualifying at Chandra Open 2013

    PBA star rolls 1467 series to lead the field of 109 players into the final qualifying day; four Englishmen crack the top 10; cut for 30th place is now 1245 (207.50 average)

    2013EBT04MikaKoivuniemi3.jpg2012EBT04JimmyRavez.jpgPBA star Mika Koivuniemi (pictured left), a two-time PBA player of the Year, topped 1467 pins and averaged 244.50 in Friday's Squad 9 to take the pole position in the qualifying of Chandra Open 2013 at Chandra Bowling in Nieuwegein, Netherlands.

    The native Finn, who lives in Hartland, Mich., rolled high games of 279 and 269 and four games between 223 and 238 to lead a field of 109 players from 12 countries heading into the final qualifying day.

    Koivuniemi, who owns 11 PBA Tour titles and seven European Bowling Tour titles, overtook previous leader Jimmy Ravez (above right) of Belgium by 38 pins. Ravez, who shot 1429 in the first qualifying squad, slipped to second place and was followed by Stuart Williams (below left) and Dominic Barrett (below right) of England.

    2013WCStuartWilliams.jpg2013EBT10DominicBarrett.jpgThe six-time EBT champions, who have won their first PBA title in the 2011-12 PBA World Series of Bowling, were next to Koivuniemi in Squad 9 with 1413 and 1394 to jump into third and fourth place, respectively.

    Jeffrey van de Wakker of the Netherlands fell from second to fifth place with 1390 total. Despite finishing Squad 9 with a 166 game, Richard Teece also totaled 1390 but ranks sixth due to the lower last game.

    Squad 2 leader Olivier Leroy of Belgium fell four spots to seventh place with 1372. Rounding out the top 8, who will receive one bye at the end of the qualifying is currently Lisanne Breeschoten (below left), Netherlands, who is the best of 13 women in the field with 1369 including 48 pins handicap.

    2013EBT02LisanneBreeschoten.jpg2013EBT13PaulMoor.jpg12-time EBT champion and three-time EBT point ranking leader Paul Moor (right) of England had six games between 209 and 255 to lead Squad 10 on Friday night with 1348 total and an average of 224.67 en route to leap into ninth place in the overall standings.

    Gianny Hendrickx of Belgium holds the 30th and last place to qualify directly for the finals with 1245 or an average of 207.50.

    Qualifying continues Saturday, Sept. 20 with Squads 11-13 scheduled for 10 a.m., 2 and 6 p.m. CEST and concludes with the one-game Desperado Squad slated for 9.30 p.m.

    The Chandra Open 2013 will be held Sept. 15-22, 2013 at 16-lane Chandra Bowling in Nieuwegein, Netherlands, The tournament is the 13th stop of the 2013 European Bowling Tour and the fourth out of seven EBT "Satellite" tournaments this season.

    The Chandra Open offers total prize fund of 25.600 Euro with 5.000 Euro going to the winner and 3.000 Euro to the runner-up, while the third and fourth place finishers will receive 2.000 Euro and 1.000, respectively.

    Qualifying of the Chandra Open (six-game series, unlimited re-entries) runs from Sunday, Sept. 15 through Saturday, Sept. 21 with the finals Squad 13 scheduled for 6 p.m. CEST, and concludes with the Desperado Squad slated for 9.30 p.m. Women receive 8 pins handicap each game throughout the entire tournament, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.

    A total of 40 players will advance to the finals on Sunday, Sept. 22 including the top 30 from the overall qualifying standings, the top 6 from a separate leader board of Squads 1-4 (Sept. 15-17), and the top 4 of the one-game Desperado Squad. The top 8 qualifiers receive a first-round bye.

    The remaining 32 players will bowl four games starting from scratch with half of the field advancing to the second round. The top 16 from Round One and the top eight qualifiers will bowl another four-game round starting from scratch to cut to the top 12.

    Those twelve will bowl six games with the pinfall from Round Two being carried forward. The player with the highest 10-game total including handicap will be declared the winner.

    2013EBTLogo_small.jpg The 2013 European Bowling Tour consists of 19 tournaments in 13 countries including two Platinum, six Gold, four Silver and seven Satellite events.

    The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event earn ranking points based on how they finish. The winner of a Platinum tournament receives 250 ranking points, the winner of a Gold tournament gets 150, the winner of a Silver tournament earns 100, and the winner of a Satellite tournament such as the 2013 Chandra Open gets 50 ranking points.

    Points are tabulated throughout the season and the top 12 men and the top 12 women qualify for the seventh EBT Masters to be held March 3, 2014 at Dolfijn Bowling in Tilburg, Netherlands immediately following the EBT Hammer Bronzen Schietspoel Tournament 2014.
