Brian Voss powers his way into the lead in II Brunswick Madrid Challenge

    PBA Hall of Famer shoots 1544 series in Squad 17 to overtake qualifying lead; Squad 18 leader Osku Palermaa moves into fifth place; score to make the cut in 38th place raises by 69 pins to 1258 (209.67 average)

    2014EBT09BrianVoss.jpg2014EBT09IdaAndersson.jpgPBA Hall of Famer Brian Voss (pictured left), United States, became the first player in the II Brunswick Madrid Challenge who surpassed the 1500-bar (a 250 average) Thursday afternoon he posted a 1544 six-game series to lead a field of 105 players from 18 countries.

    Voss, who owns who owns 25 PBA titles along with three European Bowling Tour titles, averaged 257.33 in Squad 17 including games of 245, 278, 268, 258, 267 and 228, to overtake previous leader Ida Andersson (right) of Sweden by 61 pins.

    Andersson is the best of 19 women in the field in second place with 1483 including eight pins handicap each game.

As both players finished their series with 257, Larsen ranks third due the lower second to the last game, 253 to 248 in Andersson's favor.

    Scotsman Steven Gill slipped two spots to fourth place with 1477. Osku Palermaa (right) of Finland led the 18th qualifying squad Thursday evening with 1467, an average of 244.50, to move into fifth place.

    The three-time PBA champion, who is tied with England's Paul Moor for the most EBT titles at 13, rolled games of 227, 256, 269, 258, 211 and 246.

    Koshelev, who won his first EBT title earlier this season in the Ekaterinburg Open 2014, used a high game of 268 and three 250s for 1465, good for sixth place overall. Frouvelle chalked up 1394 including a 279 to sit in 10th place.

    The top 10 at the end of the qualifying will receive two byes for the finals. The score to make the top 20, who will get a first-round bye, is currently 1338 or an average of 223.

    Alexander Medveditskov of Russia toppled 1364 pins including a high game of 279 to leap into 15th place.

    Juan Puerta of Spain holds the 38th and last place to advance directly to the finals with 1258 or an average of 209.67.

    Qualifying continues Friday, June 27, with Squads 19-22 scheduled to start at 9 a.m., 1, 5 and 9 p.m. Central European Summer Time.

    2014BrunswickMadridChallengeLogo_small.jpg The 2nd Brunswick Madrid Challenge will be held from Saturday, June 21, through Sunday, June 29, at 20-lane Bowling ChamartĂ­n in Madrid, Spain. The tournament is the ninth stop of the 2014 European Bowling Tour season and the third and last EBT "silver" tournament, the third-highest of four categories.

    Players will compete for total prize money of 40.250 Euro with 6.000 Euro going to the winner, 3.000 Euro to the runner-up and 2.000 Euro to the third-place finisher. Low to cash is 50th place worth 300 Euro.

    Qualifying got underway on Saturday, June 21, and runs through Saturday, June 28, with the final qualifying Squad 26 scheduled for 9 p.m. CEST. Qualifying concludes with the one-game Desperado Squad 2 slated to start 30 minutes after Midnight. The qualifying winner receives a 750 Euro bonus.

    Women receive 8 pins handicap each game (maximum score is 300), a standard on the European Bowling Tour. The top 2 women in qualifying earn 750 and 500 Euro, respectively.

    A total of 50 players will qualify for the finals on Sunday, June 29 - the top 38 players from the overall qualifying standings, the top three players from the combined standings of June 21-22 squads and the top 5 of June 23-24 squads (not among the top 38), and the top four players of the Desperado Squad. The top 10 qualifiers will receive two byes while qualifiers 11-20 will get a first-round bye.

    The first three rounds of the finals feature four games from scratch. The field will be trimmed to 30, 20 and then 10 players who will advance to another four-game round with the Round 3 total being carried forward.

    The top 3 with the highest eight-game total will advance to the stepladder finals. The finals will be decided in one-game matches. The No. 2 seed bowls the No. 3 seed for the right to bowl the top seed for the title.

    2014EBTLogo_small.jpg The 2014 European Bowling Tour features 20 tournaments in 14 countries. In its 15th season, the EBT consists of two Platinum, six Gold, three Silver and nine Satellite tournaments. The total prize fund exceeds one million Euro.

    The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event receive ranking points. Those points will be tabulated throughout the season to determine the top 12 men and top 12 women, who will compete in the eighth EBT Masters July 6, 2015 at Bowling ChamartĂ­n in Madrid, Spain, immediately following the III Brunswick Madrid Challenge.
