Kang Heewon claims fourth gold medal for Korea in Masters at Men's World Championships

Kang Heewon of Korea struck three times in the 10th frame of the title match at the 2014 Men's World Championships to defeat Team USA's Mike Fagan, 213-198, and to capture the gold medal in Masters Sunday afternoon Khalifa International Bowling Center in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.
Trailing by 19 pins in the seventh frame, Fagan had a chance to take the lead in the ninth frame, as Kang opened after failing to convert the 2-4-6-7 split. Instead, the American gave the advantage back leaving a 3-4 split that resulted in an open frame.
Finishing first, Fagan (left) rolled three strikes to force Kang to mark in the 10th. The Korean (right) matched Fagan's three-bagger to win his second gold in this Championship (the other was in the Team event) and the fourth gold medal for Korea, which led the medal tally with four gold and four bronze medals.
It was the fourth silver medal for Fagan after Trios, Team and All-Events. It marked the first time since the 1999 World Championships, also here in Abu Dhabi, that the U.S. team did not win a gold medal.

In the semi-finals Heewon and Fagan eliminated top-seeded Choi Bokeum (left) and Park Jongwoo (right), who had to settle for the bronze medals. Heewon started his match against Jongwoo, who won gold in Doubles (with Bokeum) and the Korean Team, with a four-bagger and never looked back to cruise to an undisputed 231-190 win.
Fagan also started his match against Bokeum with four consecutive strikes to lead by 60 pins after the Korean failed to convert two of three consecutive splits in frames 2-4. Bokeum, who was looking for his fourth gold medal after Doubles, Team and All-Events, rebounded with a five-bagger to force Fagan to strike in the 9th and 10th frame to shut him out.
Fagan opened in the ninth (2-4-10) and got only the first strike in the 10th for 212. Needing one more strike to advance, the Korean lefty left a ringing 7 pin to hand the match to the American.
It was the 12th medal in a World Championship for Bokeum, who now own five gold, four silver and three bronze medals.
The 2014 Men's World Championships will come to an end this evening at 19.00 Gulf Standard Time (GST) with a banquet at the Aloft hotel in Abu Dhabi.
The 2014 World Tenpin Bowling Association Men's World Championships will be held from December 4-15 at 40-lane Khalifa International Bowling Center in Zayed Sports City, Abu Dhabi, UAE. 272 players from 49 countries participate in the event.
The Championships, hosted by World Bowling Tenpin, the Emirates Bowling Federation and Zayed Sports City, is open to all WTBA Member Federations who are currently paid up members of World Bowling and their respective zone (PABCON, ETBF, and ABF).
Maximum six men per country compete for gold, silver and bronze medals in Singles, Doubles, Trios, five-player Teams, All-Events and Masters in the 9-day competition (Dec. 6-14).

In accordance with the World Bowling Tenpin Playing Rules, the 2014 Men's World Championships will be contested on two lane conditioning pattern, the 38 ft. Atlanta pattern and the 43 ft. Tokyo pattern, a medium and a long pattern from the World Bowling bank of patterns.
The Championships are the fourth World Championships for men only since the world's governing body for the sport of tenpin bowling has decided at the WTBA congress in the year 2003 to split the men's and women's events .
The 2006 MWC took place in Busan, Korea (on 33 ft. Sydney and 43 ft. Tokyo pattern), and was followed by Bangkok, Thailand in 2008 (on 34 ft. Stockholm and 43 ft. Tokyo pattern) and Munich, Germany in 2010 (38 ft. Atlanta and 43 ft. Tokyo pattern).
