Glover beats Froggatt in All-English final in San Marino

The championship match in the 2nd San Marino Open at Rose'n Bowl in Serrvalle was an All-English affair. Former 3-time World Champion Zara Glover rolled games of 241 and 226 to defeat Nick Froggatt, 467-447 scratch and 483-447 including the women's handicap (8 pins per game).
Glover earned 10.000 Euro, while Froggatt received 5.500 for finishing second. Both players received 100 ranking points.
In the semis, Glover sidelined another compatriot, Stuart Williams, 411-373, while Froggatt ousted Pasi Uotila, Finland, 474-378. Williams and Uotila earned 3.000 apiece for third and fourth place, resp.

Former World Cup and World Game champion Kai Virtanen easily led the first round of the finals in the San Marino Open in Serrvalle. Virtanen started his six-game block with 233 and 199, then fired games of 245, 256, 278 and 267 for 1478 pinfall total, an average of 246,33.
The Finn led the top 24 players - 19 men and 5 women - into the match play finals. Match play is single-elimination two-game matches decided by total pinfall. The top 8 from the Round of 48 earned a bye for the first match play round.

Players seeded 9-24 will meet in the first match play round. The winners face the top 8 in next round. The field will be cut to 8, then 4, then 2, who will bowl for the title and the 10.000 Euro top prize.

Palermaa wins qualifying in San Marino Open
Finn Osku Palermaa held onto his lead in the 2nd San Marino Open on Saturday en route to win the qualifying and an 800 Euro bonus with 1482 six-game total and an average of 247,00. Dutch Ronald Dol, who shot the tournament's sole 300-game thus far, was second with 1477. Five players booked a spot for the finals on Sunday in the 12sf and final qualifying squad on Saturday evening. Antonio Di Francesco, Italy, led the squad with 1361, good enough for 17th place. Austrian Ivonne Gross was close behind with 1354 including 48 pins handicap to jump into 22nd position. Gross is one of nine women who survived the first cut.
The top 45 players from the qualifying including the top six players from the first weekend plus the top three from the 'Desperado Squad' - 48 players overall - advanced.
The 48 finalists will bowl 6 games starting from scratch to cut to the top 24 for match play. Match play is single-elimination two-game matches decided by total pinfall. The top 8 from the Round of 48 will bypass the first match play round.
After four rounds of head-to-head matches, the two remaining bowlers meet in the championship match to vie for the title and the 10.000 Euro top prize.

Ronald Dol, Netherlands, started the 20th and penultimate qualifying squad in San Marino with the tournament's first 300-game but fell five pins short in his attempt to overtake the lead. Dol had games of 300, 279, 201, 233, 240 and 224 for 1477 six-game total to leap into second place behind Osku Palermaa, Finland, with 1482. Stuart Williams (right), England, currently the No. 3 in Europe behind compatriot Paul Moor and Palermaa, moved into third place behind a 1417 series. With the final squad remaining the cut for the top 39 is 1295, a 215,83 average. Qualifying concludes tonight with the 'Desperado Squad'.

Dutch Ghislaine van der Tol (left) and Patricia Schwarz (right) from Germany cracked the top 10 in Saturday's qualifying in the 2nd San Marino Open at Rose'n Bowl in Serrvalle. Van der Tol had high games of 255 and 259 to become the top ranked female bowler in the tournament with 1409 pinfall total including 48 pins handicap, an average of 226,83 scratch. Schwarz used a high game of 257 to move into 9th place with 1371 (incl. hc).
