ETBF regulates handicap for women in European Bowling Tour

For the mutual benefit and equitable play of all participants, the European Tenpin Bowling Federation (ETBF) has adopted a standardized handicap for women on the European Bowling Tour. Effective as of January 1, 2006 female bowlers will be awarded eight pins handicap per game in all European ranking tournaments with mixed divisions.
"The handicap has until now varied from tournament to tournament, but in the last few years most tournaments has adopted 8 pins per game as the most common used handicap," said ETBF vice president Kim Thorsgaard Jensen.
The majority of the 2005 EBT tournaments (13 out of 18) gave 8 pins handicap. Two tournaments (Viernheim Open and Dutch Open) - gave 7 pins handicap. The three Italian tournaments (Golden Bowl Turin, Memorial Vendemini and Oltremare Championships) were the only tournament which offered 10 pins handicap for women. The Irish Open and Malta Open have separate divisions for men and women.
Only the tournaments in Viernheim and Oltremare will have to adjust their handicapping system, as the three others will not be part of the 2006 tour.
"With the purpose of equalizing the conditions for all players entering tournaments adopted in the European Bowling Tour, the size of the handicap has been discussed by the ETBF Presidium," Thorsgaard Jensen said. "The decision is to adopt 8 pins per game in handicap for women in tournaments with mixed divisions as a uniformed rule for the European Bowling Tour.
"Various calculations made by various individuals have proven that 8 - at least in these years - is the most accurate handicap when the number of women in tournaments is compared with the number of women qualified for the first final stage."
The handicap is described in EBT Rule 14.5 as follows:
14.5 Women handicap
a) In case of a mixed women and men division, women will be awarded 8 pins per game in handicap in all whole games played in the tournament.
b) A handicap is counted as a pinfall.
c) No handicap will be awarded in roll-off shots and roll-off frames.
