Palermaa captures the title in Hammer Bronzen Schietspoel Tournament

    2009EBT02Top4.jpg Two-time defending European ranking champion Osku Palermaa rolled games of 231 and 236 en route to capture the title in the Hammer Bronzen Schietspoel Tournament 2009 at Dolfijn Bowling in Tilburg, Netherlands.

    The two-hander from Finland had a 467 two-game total to beat Dutch Peter Smits (442), Mads Sandbækken, Norway (436) and Tobias Karlsson, Sweden (419) in the final round.

    Palermaa received 12.000 Euro for the victory. Smits pocketed 6.000 Euro for second place. Sandbækken took home 4.000 Euro for third place and Karlsson garnered 2.000 Euro for fourth place.

    Qualifying leaders Ghislaine van der Tol, Netherlands, and Nicki Ainge, England, were eliminated in the penultimate round. Van der Tol finished in sixth place and beat out Ainge (8th) for the top spot in the women's rankings, 408 to 394.

Barrett (left) led the four-player group with 525 2-game total and Palermaa (right) was second with 439. Also advancing were qualifying leaders Ghislaine van der Tol, Netherlands, and Nicki Ainge, England as well as Peter Smits, Netherlands, Tobias Karlsson, Sweden, Mads Sandbækken, Norway, and Dennis Eklund, Sweden.

    2009EBT02GhislainevanderTol_small.jpg The top eight players from the qualifying in the Hammer Bronzen Schietspoel Tournament 2009 bypassed the first three rounds of the finals and took on the lanes at Dolfijn Bowling in Tilburg, Netherlands, in Round 4.

    Qualifying leader Ghislaine van der Tol (left), Netherlands, led her group with 463 while second-placed Nicki Ainge, England, and third-placed Mai Ginge Jensen, Denmark, finished their respective groups in second place to advance to the fifth round.

    2008EvjeOpenMadsSandbaekken_small.jpg Mads Sandbækken (right), Norway, had the highest two-game total of the 24 players with 506. The top 2 players from each of the six 4-player groups plus the four players of the 3rd and 4th place finishers with the highest total advanced.

    A total of 64 players - 48 men and 16 women - advanced to the finals on Sunday, Feb. 22, the top 54 qualifying leaders, the top 6 from a combined standing of Squads 1-4, who are not among the top 54, and the top 4 from the Desperado Squad. The top 8 qualifiers earned three byes, qualifiers 9-16 received two byes and qualifiers 17-24 got one bye.

    The players were seeded into groups of four players each to determined the champion in seven rounds over two games total pinfall. Basically the top two players plus some 'lucky losers' (rounds 1-4), advanced to the next round and were reseeded according to pinfall in the previous round.

    The field will be cut from 64 to 48, 36, 24, 16, 8 and the then four, who will battle it out for the title.
