Williams remains unchallenged, wins qualifying in VII Catalonia Open

Stuart Williams (pictured left), England, led the 120 player field after 12 qualifying squads in the VII Catalonia Open - Trofeu Galasa at Bowling Pedralbes in Barcelona, Spain. The 2007 World Ranking Masters champion led Squad 3 with 1474 including high games of 279, 258 and 256 for 1474 and an average of 245.67 and never looked back. Bowling in Squad 10 on Saturday, Williams led the squad with 1442.
Finns Osku Palermaa and Krista Pöllänen (right) finished in second and third place with 1468 and 1464. Pöllänen, who was the best of 37 women in the field, received 48 pins handicap, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.
André Philippe, France topped the 11th and penultimate qualifying squad en route to land in fourth place with a 1455 six-game series and an average of 242.50. Philippe had an 803 series in games 2-4 with 266, 257 and 280.
Cheska Tomas, Netherlands, led the 9th qualifying squad Saturday morning. Her 1349 pinfall total including 48 pins women's handicap was the lowest of all 12 squad leaders. Though Tomas fell out of the top 30 and finished in 34th place, she was automatically qualified for the finals on Sunday as one of the squad leaders.
A total of 17 players, 14 men and 3 women, have cracked the 1400-bar. Lucas Legnani, Argentina, was 17th with 1401. François Sacco (left), France, and Kirsten Penny, England, were the only players from the 12th and final squad who made the top 30. Sacco posted a 1377 series to move into 22nd place while 2007 EBT ranking champion Penny had 1365 including handicap, good for 29th place.
