PBA Hall of Famer Brian Voss targets his second EBT title in Vienna

24-time PBA champion and PBA Hall of Famer Brian Voss (pictured) targets his second title on the European Bowling Tour when he will compete in the 7th Columbia 300 Vienna Open, the 11th stop on the 2009 Tour and one of its "Majors". The tournament will be held from Sep. 29 - Oct. 4, 2009 at Plus Bowling in Vienna, Austria. Bowlingdigital will cover the event live from Vienna.
Voss has won 23 PBA Standard titles and one Major (PBA National Championship) during his illustrious career which has earned him also the PBA Player of the Year Award (1988) and a 13th place on the list of the 50 Greatest Players in the PBA history.
His winning streak on the PBA Tour for 12 straight seasons from 1987-98 ended when he broke his wrist in a bicycling accident. The 51-year-old right-hander entered his rookie season on PBA Senior Tour in 2009 finishing second twice including a runner-up finish in 2009 PBA Senior U.S. Open.
Voss earned an exemption for the 2009-10 PBA Tour as first "Golden Parachute" selection which is awarded to a past exempt player who lost his exemption.
His first victory on the European Bowling Tour came in 2005 when he won the Trofeu Internacional Ciutat de Barcelona, a Major on the EBT. He added another runner-up finish in the 2009 Brunswick Euro Challenge, losing to fellow PBA champion Mike Fagan in the title match, 236-225. Watch the Video here.
Voss, who speaks German, has registered to bowl in Squad 9 on Thursday at 8pm, Squad 12 on Friday at 5pm and Squad 16 on Saturday Oct. 3, the final day of qualifying, at 4pm.
The PBA super star will face a strong field of more than 330 bowlers in Vienna. Among the 330-plus player field will be two former Vienna Open champions, defending champion Patricia Luoto (left), Germany and 2007 winner Dennis Eklund (right), Sweden.
Anders Öhman, Sweden, won the inaugural event in the year 2003 and was followed by Amedeo Spada, Italy (2004), Osku Palermaa, Finland (2005) and Wu Siu Hong, Hong Kong (2006).
Palermaa, the two-time defending EBT ranking champion and current ranking leader as well as 2nd through 4th ranked Dominic Barrett, England, Martin Larsen, Sweden, and Paul Moor, England, will miss the 7th Columbia 300 Vienna Open as they participate in the Weber Cup, which once again managed to clash with the EBT event.
If fifth ranked Eklund would win his second Vienna Open title after 2007 he would narrow the gap to Palermaa to 15 ranking points.
The 7th annual Columbia 300 Vienna Open is the 11th stop of the 2009 European Bowling Tour and one of the Tour's "Majors". The tournament will be held from Tuesday Sep. 29 through Sunday Oct. 4, 2009 at the renovated 32-lane Plus Bowling in Vienna, Austria.
The Vienna Open offers an increased total prize fund of 68.130 Euro - 57.900 € for Singles and 10.230 € for the Doubles event. The singles champion will receive the 6.000 € top prize while the doubles winners will split 1.600 €.
A 9-pin no-top tournament on Monday evening will kick off the five-day qualifying portion with free entries into the Vienna Open at stake. Players will be divided in four different average groups, but only players with less than 200 average are allowed to enter the no-tap tournament.
As every year since the inaugural Vienna Open in the year 2003, Bowlingdigital will cover the event live from Plus Bowling in Vienna with stories and results after each round commencing Monday Sept. 28 all the way through to the finals on Sunday Oct. 4.
