Local favorite Thomas Tybl wins Squad 5 at 8th Columbia 300 Vienna Open

    Israel's Ben Fishler, Aviv Afital move into third place in Doubles

    2010EBt15ThomasTybl.jpg2010EBT15ThomasGross2.jpgUSBC Silver level coach Thomas Tybl, (pictured right), co-owner of the pro shop at Plus Bowling in Vienna, had 1133 after five games and was targeting to overtake the lead in the fifth qualifying squad of the 8th Columbia 300 Vienna Open.

    Tybl, who won the gold medal in Doubles with defending Vienna Open champion Thomas Gross (right) at the 2007 Men's European Championships in this center, struggled in his final game but secured the top spot in this squad to qualify for Sunday's finals.

    Tybl had games of 195, 255, 228, 256, 199 and 169 for 1302 six game total and an average of 217, good for 6th place in the overall qualifying standings. Gross continued to lead the field of 141 players with a 1385 (230.83).

    Or Aviram, Israel, remained in second place with 1355 and is followed by Perttu Jussilä, Finland, in third place with 1352. Katerina Bestova Czech Republic, is the best women in the field in fourth place with 1348 including 48 pins handicap. Fifth place belonged to Gal Shemer, Israel, with 1343.

    Ben Fishler and Aviv Afital, Israel, led Squad 5 in Doubles with 2519 (209.92) en route to move into third place. Their compatriots Gal Shemer and Or Aviram (pictured right, l-r) held onto the lead with 2698.

    Timo Alho and Perttu Jussilä, Finland, remained in second place with 2554 (212.83).

    Petri Keituri, Finland, also teamed with Timo Alho to finish in second place, six pins ahead of Tybl/Stickney, with 2460.

    Keituri had the second highest individual total in Squad 5 with 1277 while Fishler was third with 1266. Fishler sits in 7th place with his 1290 high series and Keituri overtook 8th place.

    Walther Kasper, Denmark, is the "man on the bubble" in 52nd place with 1151 or an average of 191.83.

    Qualifying continues on Wednesday with Squad 6 scheduled to start at 8pm CET:

    2010VOLogo.jpg The 8th Columbia 300 Vienna Open is the 15th stop of the 2010 European Bowling Tour and one of the Tour's "Gold" events. The tournament will be held from Tuesday Sept. 28 through Sunday Oct. 3, 2010 at 32-lane Plus Bowling in Vienna, Austria.

    Since the Ankara Open and the Austria Challenge have been cancelled and the English Open has lost its EBT status, the 2010 EBT Tour consists of 18 events - 2 EBT Platinum tournament (formerly Premier), 6 EBT Gold tournaments (formerly Major), 6 EBT Silver tournaments (formerly Challenger) and 4 EBT Satellite tournaments (new category).

    Players will compete for an increased total prize money of 70.630 Euro - 60.400 € in Singles and 10.230 € in Doubles. The singles champion will receive the 7.000 Euro top prize while the doubles winners will split 1.600.

    2010EBT15OilPattern.jpg Once again the qualifying for the Vienna Open finals is contested as a doubles tournament. Each duo rolls at least one six-game block. Unlimited re-entries with different partners are possible but each player can only cash once with the same partner.

    Qualifying runs from Tuesday through Saturday and ends with the ultimate one-game Desperado Squad on Saturday night Oct. 2 slated for 11.30 pm local time (GMT +1). Women receive 8 pins handicap each game, a standard on the European Bowling Tour

    A total of 64 players will qualify for the Vienna Open finals on Sunday, Oct. 3:
    • the top 52 players from the overall qualifying standings
    • the first player each from Squad 1-6, who is not among the top 52 (total 6 players)
    • and the top 6 from the Desperado Squad.


    The top 8 qualifying leaders will bypass the first round of the finals.

    The other 52 players will bowl 6 games starting from scratch to cut to the top 22, who will join the top qualifiers in Round Two.

    Those 30 players will bowl another 6 games starting from scratch after which the field will be trimmed to the top 18, who will carry their pinfall forward into Round Three. After another 6-game block the top 4 with the highest 12-game total will advance to the stepladder finals.

    The No. 4 seed meets the No. 3 in the opening match and the winner takes on the No. 2 seed for the right to bowl the top seed for the title, 150 ranking points and the 7.000 Euro top prize.
