Bec Voukolos, Michael Little win qualifying of the AMF Australian Masters

    Top four players earn two byes; places 5-16 get one bye

    2010AUSMastersLogo_small.jpg2010AUSMastersRebeccaVoukolos4.jpgMichael Little of News South Wales and Rebecca Voukolos (right), Northern Territory won the qualifying of the AMF Australian Masters 2010 Friday at AMF Bowling Rooty Hill RSL in Sydney, Australia, en route to lead the top 40 mane and top 40 women into the finals on Friday and Saturday.

    The AMF Australian Masters 2010 offers more than Australian $110,000 in prize fund and was incorporated in the 49th Australian Adult National Championship. This year the event, which has record entries, is sponsored by AMF with first prize for men of $25,000 and women $15,000 AUD.

    Bowlers qualified for the event over 6 games which must be taken from either a singles, doubles or mixed doubles block of 3 games. The bowlers' best two attempts made up their qualifying score.

The 2003 World Championships gold medalist in Masters, who has won the Australian Masters in 2002, had high series of 787 and 709 for 1496 six-game total and an average of 249.33.

    Also earning two byes were Chris Kirwin (left), Northern Territory, who was second with 1492, as well as Jason Doust, Australian Capital Territory, in third place with 1485 and Robert Townsend, ACT, who finished fourth with 1472 including the first 300 game of the championships.

    Defending champion Paul Trotter, Victoria, landed in ninth place with 1403. New Zealand's Craig Nevatt hit the cutoff number in 33rd place with 1354 or an average of 225.67.

    Places 34 through 40 belonged to State representatives, who cannot be eliminated from qualifying.

Long-time Team USA member Lynda Barnes (pictured left) finished in second place with 1423 (237.17).

    Fellow Team USA member Wendy Macpherson (right) was third with 1382 and Raniia Nugroho, NSW, took the fourth and last place to receive two byes with 1371.

    WIBC Hall of Famer Dana Miller-Mackie, United States, hit the cutoff number for 16th place with 1287 (214.50). Defending women's champion Jacinta Gilliland, Queensland, made the cut in 32nd place with 1197while Samantha Day-Johnston, took the 37 and last spot to qualify with 1151 as places 38 through 40 belonged to State representatives.

    The first and the round of the men's and women's finals will be held on Friday afternoon.

    A total of 40 men and 40 women advanced to the finals. The top 4 in each division received two byes to Round 3 while bowlers seeded positions 5 through 16 received one bye to Round 2. Bowlers filling qualifying positions 17 through 40 will compete in Round 1. No pinfall will carry over in any of the final rounds.

    Bowlers 17 through 40 will bowl 6 games scratch to cut to the top 12 bowlers who will join bowlers seeded positions 5 through 16 in Round 2. These 24 bowlers will then play 6 games scratch. The top 12 bowlers on total pinfall meet the top 4 qualifiers in Round 3.

    These 16 bowlers will then play 6 games scratch. The top 8 bowlers on total pinfall will determine the champion in single-elimination best-of-five games match play. The field will be cut to 4 and then two players who will bowl for the 2010 AMF Australian Masters titles and the $25,000 and $15,000 AUD top prizes, respectively. The winners will also get free entry into the 2011 event.
