Christian Racpan cracks top 10 in 7th Storm San Marino Open qualifying

    Frouvelle, Sacco, Racpan, Gaillard atop Squad 5-11 leaderboard; cut for 38th place is 1254 (209 ave.)

    2011EBT11ChristianRacpan.jpg2011EBT11AntonioMaddaloni2.jpgChristian Racpan (pictured left) of Germany was the sole player in Wednesday's squads 9-11, who cracked the top 10 in the qualifying of the 7th Storm San Marino Open currently underway at Rose'n Bowl in Serravalle, San Marino.

    Racpan had games of 238, 201, 214, 235, 216 and 268 to lead Squad 9 with 1372 six-game total and an average of 228.67 en route to jump into sixth place in the overall qualifying standings.

    Racpan as well as 4th place Serge Frouvelle, 5th place Thierry Sacco and 10th place Laurence Gaillard have positioned themselves atop a separate leaderboard of squads 5-11 and will earn automatic berths into Sunday's finals if they don't finish among the top 38 in qualifying.

His compatriots Maurizio Celli and Davide Spagnoli remained in second and third place with 1412 and 1399, respectively.

    Frouvelle (pictured left) had the highest series on Wednesday after leading Squad 10 with 1392 including high games of 287 and 258, just two pins less of his best attempt in Squad 6. Frouvelle remained in fourth place with 1394 and is followed by Sacco in fifth with 1390.

Radi still has the tournament's sole 300 game so far. French international Yoan Alix is ninth with 1351 and is followed by Gaillard, who remained the best woman in the field with 1347 including handicap.

    Dutch national team members Carmen Haandrikman (left) and Wendy Kok (right) are close behind in 11th and 12th place with 1345 and 1340, respectively.

PBA Hall of Famer Amleto Monacelli (right) of Venezuela tested the lanes Wednesday night landing in 57th place with 1213. The 19-time PBA champion and two-time PBA Player of the Year was the first non-U.S. citizen who was inducted into the PBA Hall of Fame in the year 1997.

    As the tournament has reached its halfway point with 11 out of 22 squads in the books, Rene Bigall, Germany, is the "man on the bubble" in 38th place with 1254 or an average of 209. Qualifying continues on Thursday, July 7 with Squads 12-14 scheduled for noon, 4 and 8 p.m. CET.

    2011EBT11SanMarinoBanner_small The 7th Storm San Marino Open is the 11th stop of the 2011 European Bowling Tour and the fourth out of six EBT "Gold" tournaments this season.

    The tournament will be held from July 2-10, 2011 at 18-lane Rose'n Bowl in Serravalle, San Marino and offers total prize fund of 60.000 Euro with 10.000 Euro going to the winner, 6.000 to the runner-up and 3.400 each to the third and fourth place finisher.

Nicole Sanders (right) of the Netherlands finished in sixth place to win the women's rankings.

    Since the Viborg International in Viborg in Denmark has been cancelled, the 2011 European Bowling Tour consists of 21 tour stops in 17 countries including two Platinum, six Gold, seven Silver and six Satellite tournaments.

    The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event receive ranking points. The winner of a Platinum tournament receives 250 ranking points, the winner of a Gold tournament such as the San Marino Open gets 150, the winner of a Silver tournament earns 100, and the winner of a Satellite tournament gets 50 ranking points.

    The top 16 men and the top 16 women at the end of the 2011 season qualify for the fifth EBT Masters to be held at Dream-Bowl Palace in Unterföhring near Munich, Germany on April 30 and May 1, 2012. The event will become the first EBT Masters to be contested on single lane condition.

    Qualifying of the 7th Storm San Marino Open (six-game series, unlimited re-entries) runs from Saturday, July 2nd through Saturday, July 9th with the last qualifying squad 22 scheduled for 9 p.m. CET.

    Qualifying will conclude with the one-game Desperado Squad slated for 12.30 a.m. on Sunday morning. The qualifying winner will be awarded a 1.000 Euro bonus. Women will receive 8 pins handicap each game throughout the entire event, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.

    The San Marino Open features a 40 feet Kegel lane conditioning pattern with 24.25ml volume oil total.

    A total of 48 players will advance to the finals on Sunday - the top 38 players from the overall qualifying standings plus the top 3 from the squads conducted on July 2-3, the top 4 from the squads conducted on July 4-6 and the top 3 from the Desperado Squad. The top 6 qualifiers will earn two byes, while qualifiers 7-12 will get one.

    The other 36 players will bowl four games from scratch to cut to the top 18, who will meet qualifiers 7-12 in round two. Those 24 bowl another 4 games from scratch to cut to the top 10, who will join the top six qualifiers in single-elimination match play with the two game total pinfall determining the winner.

    The highest seeded player bowls the lowest seeded, the second-highest seeded players bowls the second-lowest and so on. The field will be cut to 8, 4 then 2, who will bowl for the title and the 10.000 Euro top prize.
