Dick Allen of Columbia, S.C. went 13-3 in match play and finished with a 24-game total of 6,009 pins to win the record $10,000 first prize in the Professional Bowlers Association East Region Appletree Classic at Mid-County Lanes on July 31 by 295 pins over Brad Angelo of Lockport, N.Y.

Allen, who sat in ninth place at the end of the eight-game qualifying round, started round robin match play with nine consecutive wins before suffering his first loss. The win was Allen’s third in PBA Regional competition since winning the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour’s Dick Weber PBA Playoffs title to end the 2010-11 season, and the 12th of his career.

Allen’s $10,000 prize was the largest payoff in PBA East Region history. Angelo earned $5,400 as the runner-up. The tournament, sponsored by Appletree Answering Service, drew a field of 170 participants.

In Spring Hill, Fla., Michael Williams II of Montgomery, Ala., defeated Dale Coleman of High Springs, Fla., 235-174, to win the PBA South Region Spring Hill Open at Spring Hill Lanes on Sunday. The title was Williams’ first title in PBA Regional competition, earning him a $2,500 prize along with making him eligible to compete in the 2012 PBA Tournament of Champions.

In Mokena, Ill., Derek Sapp (right) of Keokuk, Iowa, defeated Mason Brantley of Detroit, 192-177, completing a three-match climb up the stepladder to win the joint PBA Midwest/Central Region Thunderbowl Open sponsored by Dragon Palace Restaurant Sunday.

The win was Sapp’s second of the year and the seventh of his career. He also earned $2,500. Sapp started his title march by nipping Paul Bober of Morton Grove, Ill., 215-213, and slipped past Mike Steil of Wheeling, Ill., in the semifinal, 188-187, to reach the championship match.

In the PBA West Region, Mike DeVaney (left) of Murrieta, Calif., defeated California native Rhino Page of Dade City, Fla., 2-1, in the best-of-three-game title match to win the PBA Del Rosa Lanes Open in San Bernardino, Calif., Sunday. After losing to Page in the opening game, 223-258, DeVaney came back to win the next two games, 254-186 and 226-213, to claim the $3,000 first prize. DeVaney defeated Steve Warren, Arcadia, Calif., 2-0, and Page defeated Sean Rash, Montgomery, Ill., 2-1, in the best-of-three semifinal round to set up the championship match.

PBA assists with National Bowling Week promotions

The Professional Bowlers Association is lending a hand to help with the bowling industry’s National Bowling Week promotion.

The PBA is conducting a pair of youth instructional clinics at Jupiter Lanes in Jupiter, Fla., and Beverly Lanes in Arlington Heights, Ill. In the PBA South Region Jimmy Keeth Memorial Open in Florida, Andres Gomez (left) and Scott Newell (right) will be working with 25 kids on Friday, Aug. 4, at 3 p.m. while PBA members-to-be-named will conduct the Beverly Lanes clinic as part of the PBA Midwest/Central Region Beverly Lanes Senior Open sponsored by Allstate Insurance at 4 p.m. Friday. The Beverly Lanes clinic is free to the first 96 kids who sign up.

The PBA also will assist with PBA trivia contests at a handful of bowling centers across the country where grassroots bowlers will win prizes donated by the PBA for correctly answering trivia questions.

On his way to the USBC Senior Masters, Walter Ray Williams Jr. (left)  made a stop in Monroe, La., where he finished fifth in the National Horseshoe Pitching Association Championships. In addition to his portfolio of legendary bowling accomplishments, Williams is a six-time world horseshoe pitching champion and a member of the NHPA Hall of Fame.

ESPN2 will re-broadcast four half-hour segments from the 2011 PBA GEICO Team Shootout Saturday at 1 p.m. Eastern.
