Melissa Peters of Henderson, Nevada, and Adam Ishman of Las Vegas cruised into the lead in Division 1 Doubles at the United States Bowling Congress Mixed on July 3 with a 1,461 total.

Ishman, a 36-year-old right-hander, led the effort with games of 247, 235 and 269 for a 751 series, while Peters, a 29-year-old right-hander, added 248, 217 and 245 for 710. Past Team USA members Marcia Kloempken of Pleasant View, Utah, and Steve Smith of San Diego previously held the lead with 1,381.

Peters and Ishman quickly saw a look at the South Point Bowling Center that was going to give them an opportunity to make a run at the leading number, and they put an exclamation point on the effort by averaging 257 in the final game.

“I knew after the first game it was looking pretty good,” said Ishman, who helped K&K Bowling Services 5 of Las Vegas capture the Team All-Events title at the 2011 USBC Open Championships. “We broke them down the right way and just tried to keep it going with what we had to start.”

Division 1 Doubles features mixed pairs with combined entering averages of 380 and above.

Hawaiian bowler makes run at 2016 USBC Women’s Championships

Jordeen Koizumi of Waipahu, Hawaii, made a push into the top three in two Diamond-Division events after an impressive performance July 8 at the South Point Bowling Plaza.

Koizumi started by teaming with Jolene Walker Akau of Kaneohe, Hawaii, to move into third place in Diamond Doubles with a 1,381 total. Koizumi fired a 734 set, while Walker Akau added 647.

Koizumi continued strong into singles and made a run at Diamond All-Events before taking over third place with 2,092. She had 695 in singles and 663 in team.

Shannon O’Keefe of O’Fallon, Illinois, and Kendra Gaines of Orlando, Florida, lead Diamond Doubles with 1,413, and O’Keefe holds the top spot in Diamond All-Events with 2,129.

A look ahead

Only three days remain before the 2016 USBC Women’s Championships concludes its 94-day run at the South Point Bowling Plaza. The 2016 event kicked off April 9, and the final competitors will take the lanes for doubles and singles July 11 at 3 p.m. Eastern.

The final team squad will be held July 10 at 7 p.m. Eastern, and the 2016 USBC Mixed also will wrap up July 10th after its final doubles and singles squad, starting at 3 p.m. Eastern.

This year marked the tournament’s 97th edition, with a tradition that began in 1916.
