QubicaAMF PBA Regional Update: Jakob Butturff wins again in Arizona

2016OCJakobButturff.jpgFresh off winning his first PBA Tour title in the PBA Xtra Frame Lubbock Sports Open, Jakob Butturff (left) of Chandler, Ariz., posted an 8-4 match play record and a 20-game total of 5,042 pins Sunday to win his fourth QubicaAMF PBA Regional title in the FlipSide Awesome Bowling Classic at FlipSide Lanes in Gilbert, Ariz.

Butturff, who earned $2,500, defeated Michael Haugen Jr. of Phoenix by 119 pins for the title. Haugen, who finished second to PJ Haggerty in the PBA Battle of Black Oak Casino West Open a week earlier, had a 9-3 match play record and 4,923 pins for 20 games including match play bonus pins.

2015PBAWSOBDickAllen.jpgDick Allen (right) of Columbia, S.C., and Carl Breaman of Greer, S.C., defeated the team of John Furey of Freehold, N.J., and Sam Maccarone of Blackwood, N.J., 427-403, to repeat their 2013 win in the QubicaAMF PBA South Region’s AMF Fredericksburg Over/Under Doubles presented by Radical at AMF Fredericksburg (Va.) Lanes Sunday.

The title was Breaman’s second as a PBA member and Allen’s 18th in PBA Regional competition. Each earned $2,000. Breaman had previously won a PBA South Region tournament in 1999, but didn’t earn a title because he was a non-member at the time.

Over the July 8-10 weekend, QubicaAMF PBA Regional events include the PBA Wine Country West/Northwest Open presented by Roto Grip at Double Decker Lanes in Rohnert Park, Calif.; the PBA50 Cecil Raymond Memorial presented by Track at 30 Strikes in Stratford, N.J.; the PBA Grand Hotel, Casino & Resort Southwest Open at Firelake Bowling Center in Shawnee, Okla.; the PBA Crystal Automotive Spring Hill South Open presented by Track at Spring Hill Lanes in Spring Hill, Fla., and the PBA Chuck’s Boots Midwest Open presented by Krey Distributing and 590 The Fan at St Charles Lanes in St. Charles, Mo.

Closing the July schedule will be the PBA/PWBA Striking Against Breast Cancer Mixed Doubles, presented by Xtra Frame, at Bowl on Bellaire (formerly Palace Lanes) in Houston, Texas. The tournament affectionately called the “Luci” in honor of the late Luci Bonneau, who died of breast cancer, begins on Friday, July 28, and concludes on Sunday, July 31. All rounds will be covered live on PBA’s online bowling channel, Xtra Frame, and both PBA and PWBA Tour titles will be awarded if the respective players are members.

Quick Notes

2015PBAWSOBVIIMookieBetts.jpgMookie Betts‘ bowling fan club can’t do anything except grow after his selection to the starting outfield for the American League in next week’s All-Star Games in San Diego.

Betts, the Boston Red Sox right fielder who made his debut in PBA competition during the GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling VII in Reno last December, has been the American League’s best leadoff hitter throughout the first half of the major league baseball season, hitting .298 with 18 home runs and 57 RBIs, which is tied for fifth best in the American League. And as an fyi, Betts is planning to return to the PBA WSOB VIII in Reno this winter.
