Germany starts Women's World Championships with victory in Doubles

     L-R Martina Beckel and Tanya Petty from Germany became the first World Champions at the inaugural Women's World Championships at Lovvang Bowling Center in Aalborg, Denmark. The duo finished their six-block with a 479-game to claim the gold medal in Doubles with 2640 pinfall total and an average of 220.

    Beckel, who won the gold medal in Singles at the 1991 Worlds said: "It's a dream, amazing to win another World Championship title after 14 years. It's hasn't sunk in yet, but it will when I will listen to the German National anthem later." The Germans needed a 416 in the final game to overtake leader United States, but was down by 30 pins to Denmark at that time. Petty, who started the game with a seven-bagger, added: "I was so nervous, unbelievable. I wished the game would have been over earlier."

     Denmark's European ranking champions Kamilla Kjeldsen and Britt Bröndsted captured the silver medal with 2590. The duo took the lead after five games behind games of 512 and 482. They were unable to double till the last three frames when they sealed the silver medal with a double each.

    Both teams overtook Shannon Pluhowsky and Lynda Barnes, who led since the first squad. The Team USA members earned bronze with 2578. Deja-vu for former professional Lynda Norry-Barnes, who fell short to Martina Beckel in 1991 earning the silver medal.

    Fourth place went to Malaysia's Lai Kin Ngoh and Choy Poh Lai with 2559. Inngellimar Contreras and Patricia Ciotti needed a 430, final game to overtake the U.S. girls but had to settle for fifth place behind a 354-score with 2503.

    Close behind in sixth place were Swedes Eva Jönsson and Anna Mattsson-Baard with 2501, followed by Chinese Taipei spinners Wang Yu-Ling Tsai Hsin-Yi with 2492. Defending champions Zara Glover and Kirsten Penny finished 8th with 2486, mere 92 pins off the medals. Rounding out the top 10 were Australia's Ann-Maree Putney and Kate Wilton, 2482, and England's Donna Adams and Jo Harries, 2474.

    Beckel and Petty are 5th and 7th in All Events after 6 of 24 games. Jin-A Choi from Korea holds the early lead with 1354 and an average of 225,67. Use the left menu bar to find the All Events results.

With the final squad to go, Team USA's Shannon Pluhowsky and Lynda Barnes led the field with 2578, with Lai Kin Ngoh and Choy Poh Lai from Malaysia in second with 2559 and Eva Jönsson and Anna Mattsson-Baard, Sweden, in third with 2501. Adam's 1345 score is second to Jin-A Choi from Korea, who leads in All Events with 1354.

    Malaysia takes over second place in Doubles
    Pluhowsky/Barnes hold on to the lead


     Malaysia's Choy Poh Lai and Lai Kin Ngoh led the third squad in the Doubles event with 2559, six-game total and an average of 213,25, good enough to overtake the second place. With 61 doubles having completed the event, first squad leaders Shannon Pluhowsky and Lynda Barnes, United States, held on to the lead with 2578 pinfall total. Third place belonged to Eva Jönsson and Anna Mattsson-Baard from Sweden with 2501. The competition concludes on Saturday with two more squads. Click on the picture to enlarge it.

    Sweden moves into second place in Doubles

     Swedes Eva Jönsson and Anna Mattsson-Baard finished their six-game block in the Women's World Championships Doubles event with a 501-game to leap into second place after the second of five squads. The Swedes, who missed the Championship Record for one game by 12 pins, felled 2501 pins and averaged 208,42.

    First squad leaders Shannon Pluhowsky and Lynda Barnes, United States, continued to lead with 2578 pins. "We will have to wait and see," said reigning World Cup champion Pluhowsky. The third squad will be played on Friday afternoon, while Saturday will feature the squads 4 and 5 with the medal ceremony taking place immediately after the conclusion of play.

    Chinese Taipei's spinners Wang Yu-Ling and Tsai Hsin-Yi currently hold the bronze medal position with 2492. Places 4 and 5 belong to Korean bowlers, Choi Jin-A (with a spectacular armswing) and World Games champion Kim Soo-Kyung with 2456 and Gang Hye-Eun/ Hwang Sun-Ok with 2450.

    All other teams averaged less than 200 on the long oil pattern (43 feet). Lane maintenance is provided by Kegel. Kegel founder and CEO John Davis is the Technical Delegate of the championship. He is supported by Kegel's European representative Ted Thompson and Igor Rybkin (Russia) and Udo Brandt (Germany).

    United States takes the early lead in the Doubles event

     A pair of U.S. National Amateur Champions, Shannon Pluhowsky (2002-04, left) and Lynda Barnes (1995, 2005) took the early lead in the Doubles event at the Women's World Championships in Aalborg, Denmark. 2-time World Cup champion Pluhowsky led with 1308, 6-game series and Barnes, a 2-time PWBA champion added 1270 for 2578 pinfall total and an average of 214,83.

    Chinese Taipei spinners Yu-Ling Wang and Hsin-Yi Tsai are 88 pins behind in second place at 2492. Next are two more teams from the Asian Bowling Federation, Gang Hye-Eun and Hwang Sun-Ok Korea, using the traditional style, with 2450, and Alice Tay and Jennifer Tan, two spinners from Singapore with 2370.

    Women's World Championships starts with Doubles event

    216 women from 40 countries started the eight days of competition in the inaugural Women's World Championships at Lovvang Bowling Center in Aalborg, Denmark, with the Doubles event.
