The spinners are the winners, Chinese Taipei wins Team event

     Spinners Tsai Hsin-Yi, Wang Ya-Ting, Wang Yu-Ling, Chou Miao-Lin, Lin I-Fen and Huang Chiung-Yao won the second gold medal for Chinese Taipei in the 5-player team event at the Women's World Championships in Aalborg, Denmark. The first came in Trios two days ago.

    Four teams battled it out for the medals and each team could win gold or fall out of the top 3 till the final ball was rolled. The spinners, who were in 6th place after day 1 on the long pattern (43 ft.), posted the 3-game high of 3089 on the short pattern (34 ft.) to win the title with 6100 pinfall total and an average of 203,33.

     Team USA (pictured) with Lynda Barnes, Shannon O'Keefe, Stefanie Nation, Diandra Asbaty, Shannon Pluhowsky and Lisa Noor was mere 12 pins behind Chinese Taipei with 6088 total and an average of 202,93. O'Keefe doubled and Lynda Barnes struck out in the 10th frame to secure the silver medal.

    Denmark took the bronze medal to earn the third medal for the host country in as many events. Anja Ginge Jensen, Britt Bröndsted, Kamilla Kjeldsen, Rikke Simonsen and Rikke Holm Rasmussen finished with 6065 (202,17), two just three pins ahead of China's Liao Peishan, Shen Yuye, Yang Suiling, Qing Xiaoying, Zhang Yuhong and Liu Sumin who had to settle for fourth place with 6062 (202,07).

     Day 1 leader Canada could match the pace on the short pattern and slipped to 7th place with 5899 (196,63). 2003 World Championships bronze medallist Colombia slipped from 2nd place to fifth with 5981 (199,37). 6th place belonged to 2003 silver medallist Sweden with 5935 (197,83).

    Rounding out the top 10 were 8. Australia, 5876 (195,87), 9. Singapore, 5806 (193,53) and 10. Japan, 5770 (192,33). Defending champion Malaysia landed in 17th place with 5577 (185,90).

    Canada leads team event after three games


     Canada that hasn't won a team medal in any World Championships thus far stunned the favorites on the first day of the Team competition at Women's World Championships in Aalborg, Denmark. L-R Jennifer Willis-Park, (Samantha Wong), Caroline Lagrange, Kerrie Ryan-Ciach, Robin Crawford and Julie Johnson-Loyer felled 3,120 pins to lead the 5-player team from 34 countries after three games on the long-oil pattern (43 ft.) with 208 average.

    2003 bronze medallist Colombia with Rocio Restrepo, Clara Guerrero, Sara Vargas, Paola Gomez, Luz Adriana Leal and Laura Fonnegra is second with 3075. Team USA with Lisa Noor, Shannon O'Keefe, Diandra Asbaty, Lynda Barnes, Shannon Pluhowsky and Stefanie Nation is mere 14 pins behind Colombia in third with 3061.

    Defending champion Malaysia with Shalin Zulkifli, Lai Kin Ngoh, Wendy Chai, Choy Poh, Lai and Esther Cheah is already 299 pins off the medals in 20th place with 2762 (184 average).

    Team event is underway at Lovvang Bowling Center in Aalborg


    34 countries represented by five-player teams will participate in the two-day Team event in the inaugural Women's World Championships at Lovvang Bowling Center in Aalborg, Denmark. The teams were divided into 2 squads to bowl three games on the long oil pattern (43 feet) on Tuesday, and another three games on the short oil pattern (34 feet) on Wednesday. Malaysia with Sarah Yap, Choy Poh Lai, Sharon Chai, Wendy Chai, and Shalin Zulkifli are the defending champions. All but Sharon are present in Denmark. Malaysia holds the championship records for one game (1151) and six games (6208), while the 3-game record belongs to Colombia with 3335.
