Chinese Taipei wins Gold in Trios by a whisker

    2005 WWC

The decision in the Trios event at the Women's World Championships came down to the final frame. Chinese Taipei's Wang Yu-Ling, Huang Chiung-Yao and Chou Miao-Lin needed a 578-score in the final frame on the long oil pattern to overtake Singapore. Needing a mark, anchor bowler Miao-Lin left a 9-10 split on her first ball ….. and converted it to win the gold medal with new championship record of 3811.

"Fortunately for me, the 7-pin fell", said Miao-Lin afterwards. "And I thought, there must be someone on our side. I wanted to pick up the split for my teammates. I tried to forget the first shot and to focus on the spare and I got it. Yessss!"

With her 1297-series, Yu-Ling overtook the lead in All Events with a 218,92 average.

Singapore's Alice Tay, Jennifer Tan and Valerie Teo, who led the field after three games on the short oil pattern, earned the silver medal with 3806. Tay and Tan are spinners while Teo prefers the traditional style. Host country Denmark won its second medal of the championships as Anja Ginge Jensen, Rikke Simonsen and Rikke Holm Rasmussen finished in third place with 3751.

The second Chinese Taipei trio had a chance to beat Denmark for bronze medal. Tsai Hsin-Yi, Wang Ya-Ting and Lin I-Fen needed two marks in the final frame but Hsin-Yi (7-10) and I-Fen (6-7) suffered big splits that resulted in open frames and they had to settle for 4th place with 3741.

Liao Peishan, Liu Sumin and Qing Xiaoying from China started day two with games of 662 and 709. The three spinners were targeting the gold medal when disaster struck in the final game with a 531-series that send the trio to fifth place with 3727, 84 pins off the gold medal.

Lynda Barnes, Shannon Pluhowsky, who celebrated her 23rd birthday, and Diandra Asbaty ended up in 6th place with 3660. Rounding out the top 10 were trios from Malaysia (3654), Colombia (3630), Canada (3624) and Sweden (3617).

Defending champions Liza Del Rosario and Cecilia Yap (with Josephine Canare) improved 12 places on the long pattern to finish in 32nd place with 3373. Wold Doubles Champions Martina Beckel and Tanya Petty (with Patricia Schwarz) from Germany landed in 14th place with 3585.

11 of 70 trios averaged 200-plus after 3 games on short oil and 3 games on long oil. Team USA's Stefanie Nation, Lisa Noor and Shannon O'Keefe felled 3600 pins, a 200 average, to finish in 12th position.

Singapore takes Trios lead at half time

The "Triple T" trio from Singapore Alice Tay, Jennifer Tan and Valerie Teo took the lead after the first 3-game block on the short oil pattern (34 ft.) at the Women's World Championships in Aalborg, Denmark. The two spinners, Tay (725, center) and Tan (618, left), and traditional bowler Teo (609) combined for a 1952 pinfall total and an average of 216,89.

Three spinners from Chinese Taipei, Wang Yu-Ling, Chou Miao-Lin and Huang Chiung-Yao, are second with 1924, with Belgium's Christine van Boom, Vicky van de Craen and Kirsten Horemans in third with 1859.

Team USA 1 with Stefanie Nation, Lisa Noor and Shannon O'Keefe is in fourth position at 1848. Their teammates and one of the favorites for the gold medal, Lynda Barnes, Shannon Pluhowsky and Diandra Asbaty are in 14th place with 1763.

In 2003, The Philippines came from 17th place after day 1 (1735) to win the gold medal with record 3797 pinfall total behind a 2062-series on day 2. Defending champions Liza Del Rosario and Cecilia Yap teamed with Josephine Canare but landed in disappointing 44th place with 1607, 178,56 average.

Wold Doubles Champions Martina Beckel and Tanya Petty (with Patricia Schwarz) from Germany sit in 22nd place at 1738, just one place behind silver medallists Kamilla Kjeldsen, and Britt Bröndsted (with Mai Ginge Jensen) at 1748.

Less than 15 per cent of the trios (10 of 70) averaged 200-plus on the short oil pattern of which many players thought it would be the easier pattern for them as they think they don't have enough revs for the long oil. However, it seems as if many players and also many coaches aren't educated enough to bowl on multiple lane conditions.

The event concludes on Monday with three games on the long oil pattern (43 ft.)
