Pöppler, van der Tol, van der Meer, Breeschoten earn automatic berths into Chandra Open finals

    Women dominate Qualifying on Wednesday; cut for 30th place up to 1201

    2011EBT16BirgitPoppler.jpg2010EBT10GhislainevanderTol.jpgWomen bowlers dominated the qualifying of the Chandra Open Wednesday evening at Chandra Bowling in Nieuwegein, Netherlands, kicking all men out of the top 4 in the overall standings after 3 out of 12 qualifying squads.

    German national team member Birgit Pöppler (pictured left) and Dutch internationals Ghislaine van der Tol (right), Danielle van der Meer and Lisanne Breeschoten earned automatic berths into the finals on Sunday, Sept. 25.

    Pöppler rebounded from a slow start (192) with games of 242, 227 and back-.to-back 252 before she closed things out with 190 for 1355 pinfall total, an average of 225.83. Due to the women's handicap (8 pins per game), Pöppler lead the field of 71 players - 53 men and 18 women - from Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands with 1403 total.

    2009WUSODaniellevanderMeer.jpg2011WWCLisanneBreeschoten.jpgVan der Tol, who has won three open tournaments on the European Bowling Tour (2007, '09 and '10) was 17 pins behind the German with 1386 including high games of 255 and 246. Van der Meer (left) was further six pins behind in third place with 1380 including a 269 game.

    Breeschoten (right), who was the best international bowler in the 2011 Bowling's U.S. Women's Open in Texas (11th), led the squad after four games with 156 over (based on a 200 average) including a 278 game, but had to settle for fourth place due to 134 and 189 in the last two games.

    Breeschoten chalked up 1327 including handicap to beat out previous leader Johnny Spil, Netherlands, for fourth place by 16 pins, 1327 to 1311. Gerrie de Graaf (1306), Jeroen van Geel (1302) and Remco van Dommelen (1292) were the best men in Squad 3 en route to move into sixth through eighth place ion the overall standings.

    Michell Stinissen slipped from second to ninth place with 1291. Sophie van der Meer is the fifth woman in the top 10 with 1281. Maxime de Rooij, all from the Netherlands, currently holds the 30th and last place to advance with 1201.

    Qualifying continues Thursday, Sept. 22 with Squad 6 scheduled for 8 p.m. CET. Squads 4 and 5 have been cancelled.

    2011ChandraOpenLogo.jpg The Chandra Open is a newcomer on the European Bowling Tour and will be held Sept. 19-25, 2011 at 16-lane Chandra Bowling in Nieuwegein, Netherlands, The tournament is the 16th stop of the 2011 Tour and the fifth out of six EBT "Satellite" tournaments this season.

    The tournament offers total prize fund of 24.600 Euro with 5.000 Euro going to the winner and 3.000 Euro to the runner-up, while the third and fourth place finishers will receive 2.000 Euro and 1.000, respectively.

    Since the English Open has lost its EBT status, the 2011 European Bowling Tour consists of 20 tour stops in 16 countries including two Platinum, six Gold, six Silver and six Satellite tournaments.

    The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event receive ranking points. The winner of a Platinum tournament receives 250 ranking points, the winner of a Gold tournament gets 150, the winner of a Silver tournament earns 100, and the winner of a Satellite tournament such as the Chandra Open gets 50 ranking points.

    The top 16 men and the top 16 women at the end of the 2011 season qualify for the fifth EBT Masters to be held at Dream-Bowl Palace in Unterföhring near Munich, Germany on April 30 and May 1, 2012. The event will become the first EBT Masters to be contested on single lane condition.

    Qualifying of the Chandra Open (six-game series, unlimited re-entries) runs from Monday, Sept. 19 through Saturday, Sept. 24 with the last Squad 12 scheduled for 6 p.m. CET and concludes with the Desperado Squad slated for 9.30 p.m. Women will receive 8 pins handicap each game throughout the entire event, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.

    A total of 38 players will advance to the finals on Sunday, Sept. 25 - the top 30 players from the overall qualifying standings plus the top 4 from a separate leader board of Squad 1-3, and the top 4 from the Desperado Squad. The top 6 qualifiers earn one bye.

    The other 32 players will bowl six games starting from scratch with the top 10 advancing to the second round. The top 10 from Round One and the top six qualifiers will bowl six games starting from scratch to cut to the top 8.

    Those eight will bowl another six-game block with the pinfall from Round Two being carried forward. The player with the highest 12-game total will be declared the winner.
