Kovalova shoots two big games to claim Girls Masters title at European Youth Championships

    Ukrainian rolls 258 and 289 to beat Denmark's Rasmussen two-games-tio-none

    2012EYCLogo.jpg Daria Kovalova of Ukraine struck 19 times in the Girls Masters championship match en route to claim her second gold medal of the 25th European Youth Championships and her fourth in two years.

    Kovalova, who won gold in Singles and All Events at the 2010 EYC, earned the No. 1 seed for the best-of-three games singles elimination match play finals by defending her All Events title at Lovvang Bowling Center in Aalborg, Denmark.

    Targeting her fourth career EYC title, Kovalova posted two big games to defeat Pernille W. Rasmussen of Denmark, two-games-to-none. Kovalova started the first game with two spares followed by a turkey and another spare before she went of the sheet for 258.

    In the second game against Rasmussen, who swept her four opponents in the previous rounds averaging almost 210 for eight games, Kovalova converted a single-pin spare in the first frame then reeled off ten consecutive strikes to seal the victory well before the final frame. She finished with a nine-count on the fill ball for 289.

    Rasmussen took the silver medal while Shir Azulay, Israel, and Roosa Lundén, Finland, who fell to the finalists in the semifinals, shared the bronze medals.

    The English girls finished the championships atop the medal tally with two gold and two bronze medals. Ukraine a.k.a. Daria Kovalova was second with two gold and one bronze medal, Finland had one gold medal and two bronze medals, while Sweden got three silver and two bronze. The host country took two silver and two bronze medals and Israel took one bronze medal.

    The 25th European Youth Championships were held from March 31 through April 9, 2012 at Lovvang Bowling Center in Aalborg, Denmark.

    The EYC 2012 was divided in two divisions - boys and girls. Each team consisted of maximum four male and four female players, who must not have reached the age of 19 before August 31st, 2012.

    The players competed for gold, silver and bronze medals in Doubles, Teams, Singles, All Events (18 games) and Masters (top 24 in All Events, single-elimination, best-of-three games). Competition started on Monday, April 2 with the Boys Doubles and ended on Easter Sunday, April 8, with the Boys and Girls Masters match play.
