Mats Maggi is the new leader in 34th Trofeu Internacional Ciutat de Barcelona

    The Belgian and Squad 3 leader Eike Kabowski earn spots in Sunday's finals; five players crack the top 10 in Squad 2 and 3; cut for 42nd place is currently 1107 (184.50 average)

    The Belgian national team member finished his six-game block with 245 and 249 to tie previous leader Ildemaro Ruiz (right) of Venezuela at 1424 total, an average of 237.33. Maggi was seeded first due to the higher last game (Ruiz 239).

    Maggi and Ruiz, who led the opening squad on Tuesday, have already secured spots in Sunday's finals by virtue of leading one of the fifteen qualifying squads. Joining the elite group on Thursday was Eike Kabowski of Germany, who led Squad 3 with 1397 (232.83) including high games of 269, 255 and 252.

The four-time EBT point ranking winner (2006-2008, 2010) is third with 1399. Marcial Ovide of Catalonia, one of the seventeen autonomous communities of the Kingdom of Spain, is the top local bowler in fifth place with 1389.

    Three EBT champions moved into sixth to eighth place in Squad 3. Dennis Eklund of Sweden, who won the Croatia Open this season for his third career EBT title, used a 289 game, the highest game in the tournament thus far, for 1381. His compatriot Peter Ljung, a four-time titlist, was another ten pins behind with 1371 including a 275 high gane.

Rounding out the top 10 were Sami Lampo (right) of Finland, who was second to Maggi in Squad 2 with 1328, and Moises Perez Ibañez of Catalonia with 1323.

    Cristina Sanz of Catalonia was the best of twelve women in the 63-player field from 14 countries in 12th place with 1288 including 48 pins women's handicap.

    As usual in Catalonia, women benefit from a number of advantages. Besides eight pins handicap each game, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour, six women below the cut line earn automatic spots in the finals and the top 8 female qualifiers receive an additional prize money of total 5.000 Euro.

    Joan Pique Reig of Catalonia currently holds the 42nd and last place to advance with 1107 or an average of 184.50. Qualifying continues Thursday, July 19, with Squad 4-7 scheduled for 9 .am., 1, 5 and 9 p.m. CEST.

    2012EBT12BarcelonaLogo_small.jpg The 34th Trofeu Internacional Ciutat de Barcelona is the 12th stop of the 2012 European Bowling Tour and the third out of four EBT "Gold" tournaments this season.

    The tournament will be held July 17-22 at 14-lane Bowling Pedralbes in Barcelona, Spain and offers total prize fund of 60.000 Euro with 12.000 Euro going to the winner, 6.000 to the runner-up and 3.000 to the third place finisher.

    The tournament features a 41 feet Kegel lane conditioning pattern with 25.85ml volume oil total.

    The qualifying in Barcelona (six-game series, unlimited re-entries) runs from Tuesday July 17 through Saturday, July 21 with the last qualifying squad 15 scheduled for 9 p.m. CEST. Women receive 8 pins handicap each game throughout the entire tournament, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.

    A total of 48 players will advance to the finals on Sunday, July 22 - the top 42 qualifiers including all squad leaders and an additional six women.

    Those 48 players, who carry forward 50 per cent of their qualifying total, bowl four games to cut to the top 24, The top 3 players after another four-game block in Round Two qualify for the stepladder finals.

    The No. 3 seed bowls No. 2 and the winner takes on No. 1 to determine the champion in one-game matches. The stepladder finals will be broadcasted live on Eurosport 2 on Sunday, July 22 at 6.15 p.m. CEST.

    2012EBTLogo_small.jpg The 2012 European Bowling Tour is made up of 21 events in 16 countries including two Platinum, four Gold, eight Silver and seven Satellite tournaments.

    The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event earn ranking points based on how they finish in the event. The winner of a Platinum tournament receives 250 ranking points, the winner of a Gold tournament such as the 34th Trofeu Internacional Ciutat de Barcelona gets 150, the winner of a Silver tournament earns 100, and the winner of a Satellite tournament gets 50 ranking points.

    Those points will be tabulated throughout the season to determine the top 16 men and top 16 women who will compete in the sixth EBT Masters in Bratislava, Slovakia in Sept. 2013.
