Malaysia's Syafiq Ridhwan earns No. 1 seed for Men's Finals at World Singles Championships

    The top 24 players after the 12-game preliminaries advance to single-elimination bracket finals; Bahrain's Yousif Falah hits the cutoff number with 2516 (209.67 average)

    2011EBT11SyafiqRidhwan.jpg2011BWCTommyJones3.jpgSyafiq Ridhwan (pictured left) of Malaysia posted a 1394 six-game series in the second block of qualifying en route to earn the No. 1 seed for the men's finals at the World Singles Championships in Limassol, Cyprus.

    Ridhwan, who was in fifth place after the first block, rolled games of 236, 258, 215, 247, 211 and 227 for 2773 total to lead the top 24 of 71 playesr from 40 countries into the single-elimination bracket finals.

    Previous leader Tommy Jones (right), United States, who bowled his second block yesterday, slipped to second place with 2757 (229.75). The 13-time PBA titlist was one of five PBA champions in the top 10.

Three-time PBA champion Osku Palermaa of Finland was sixth with 2711 and one-time PBA champions Andrés Gómez (right) of Colombia and England's Stuart Williams were in ninth and tenth place, respectively, with 2677 and 2670.

    Opposite to Jones, Barnes and Palermaa, Gómez and Williams, have to bowl in the Round of 24. Joining Ridhwan and the three PBA stars in the top 8, who earned one bye for the finals, were Martin Paulsson, Sweden (3rd, 2757), Matt Miller, England (4th, 2735), Michael Mak, Hong Kong (7th, 2710) and Mohammed Kamel, Kuwait (8th, 2691).

Yousif Falah (right) of Bahrain took the 24th and last spot to advance with 2516 or an average of 209.67.

    All 71 men from 40 countries bowled 12 games of qualifying on the 41 feet WTBA Montreal oil pattern (Lane Map Guide).

    The top 24 players advanced to the finals Sept. 24 and 25. The top eight qualifiers receive one bye. In case of a tie in the standings for any position in the qualifying, the higher positioned will be the player with the highest last game (second last game, etc.). All qualifying pin fall is dropped.

    The first three rounds of the finals feature best-of-five game match play until the field is trimmed to the top four. The semifinal matches and the championship match are one-game matches.

    In each match of the final, the highest seeded player decides which player starts to play in the first game. For the first three rounds the starting player will change after each game. In case of a tie in any game, a one ball roll-off will be played and repeated until the tie is broken.

    The field will be trimmed to 16, 8, 4 and then two players who will determine the champion in the gold medal match. The semifinal losers will share the bronze medal.
