Clara Juliana Guerrero becomes first woman to win a squad at Vienna Open

    Colombian leads Squad 5 with 1346 to leap into third place overall; teams with qualifying leader Dan MacLelland to overtake lead in Doubles with 2666; cut for 52nd place is now 1137 (189.50 average)

    2012EBT16ClaraGuerrero.jpg2012EBT16RikuPetteriKivelae.jpgColumbia 300 staffer Clara Juliana Guerrero (pictured left) of Colombia finished her six-game series Wednesday evening at Plus Bowling in Vienna, Austria, with a four-bagger en route to win Squad 5 with 1346 total including 48 pins handicap.

    The two-time gold medalist (All Events and Masters) at the 2009 Women's World Championships became the first woman to win a squad in the 10th Columbia 300 Vienna Open. Guerrero sandwiched games of 225, 229, 233 and 225 around two 190s to beat out Riku Petteri Kivelae (right) of Finland for the top spot by 19 pins.

    Guerrero, who moved into third place, is automatically qualified for Sunday's finals. If Guerrero qualifies in the top 52, Kivelae, who sits in fourth place overall with 1327, will get the automatic berth, and so on.

Nine of the 27 women in the 147-player field from twenty countries are above the cut line.

    The next three places belonged to Austrian bowlers. Squad 1 leader, Leo Grundschober fell to fifth place with 1316 followed by Alexander Rauscher in sixth place with 1312 and Daniel Hahn in seventh place with 1310.

The top 8 at the end of the qualifying will receive a first-round bye. Finn Perttu Jussila was close behind Rash with 1283, good for ninth place.

    Rounding out the top 10 was Jens Grieger of Germany with 1279. PBA champion Scott Norton holds the 52nd and last place to advance with 1137 or an average of 189.50.

    The lead in Doubles changed again as Guerrero & MacLelland (pictured right) joined forces in Squad 5 to overtake the lead with 2666 and an average of 218.17. The Canadian is also in second place with partner Thomas Gross of Austria with 2547. Third place belonged to Kulick & Rash with 2539.

    Qualifying continues on Wednesday with Squad 6 scheduled for 8 p.m. CEST.

    2012VOLogo.jpg The 10th Columbia 300 Vienna Open is the 16th stop of the 2012 European Bowling Tour and the last of four EBT "Gold" tournaments (the second-highest category) this season. Players will compete for an increased total prize fund of 75.130 Euro (approx. $100,000) - 64.900 ‚ā¨ for Singles and 10.230 ‚ā¨ for the Doubles event.

    The singles champion will receive the 7.000 ‚ā¨ top prize, the runner-up earns 5.000 and the third and fourth-place finishers get 3.500 and 2.500 Euro, respectively. The doubles champions will split 1.600 ‚ā¨.

    The 10th Columbia 300 Vienna Open will also award a PBA Tour title if won by a PBA member or a PBA international member.

    The tournament will be contested on 39 ft. oil pattern with 27.1 ml volume oil total (Kegel LaneMap‚ĄĘ Guide Plus Bowling Vienna).

    The qualifying of the Vienna Open is traditionally contested as a Doubles tournamentwhich runs from Tuesday, Oct. 2 through Saturday, Oct. 6 with the final Squad 17 starting at 8 p.m. local time (CEST). Qualifying concludes with the one-game Desperado Squad slated for 11.30 p.m. Women receive 8 pins handicap each game, a standard on the European Bowling Tour

    A total of 64 players will qualify for the Vienna Open finals on Sunday, Oct. 7:
    • the top 52 players from the overall qualifying standings
    • the first player each from Squad 1-6, who is not among the top 52 (total 6 players)
    • and the top 6 from the Desperado Squad.

    The top 8 qualifying leaders will bypass the first round of the finals. The other 56 players will bowl six games starting from scratch to cut to the top 22, who will join the top qualifiers in Round Two.

    Those 30 players will bowl another six games starting from scratch after which the field will be trimmed to the top 18, who will carry the pinfall forward into Round Three. After another six-game block the top 4 players with the highest 12-game total will advance to the stepladder finals.

    Bowling fans around the world will be able to watch the stepladder finals on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 5 p.m. CEST (11.00 a.m. EDT; 11.00 p.m. Hong Kong Time) live on Bowlingdigital TV. The award ceremonies are scheduled for 6.00 p.m. CET. The live streaming coverage is a partnership between Bowlingdigital.com, Austrian Bowling Federation, Plus Bowling, Columbia 300 and Ottakringer, the official beer of the Vienna Open.
