Finn Petteri Salonen continues hot hand and leads qualifying in San Marino

Multiple European champion Petteri Salonen (pictured left) of Finland, who won the qualifying of the Brunswick Italia Challenge last week, continued hot hand Monday at Rose'n Bowl in Serravalle and took over the lead in the qualifying of the 9th San Marino Open.
Opposite to the Italia Challenge, the San Marino Open awards a 1.000 Euro bonus for the qualifying winner. The long-time Finnish national team member started Squad 5 with games of 182, 216, 246 and 203 before he closed out with 268 and 279 for 1394 total and an average of 232.33.
Salonen's strong finish came at the expense of Yoan Alix (right) of France, who finished mere four pins off the top spot with 1390 despite a final 259 game and four 230s. Salonen and Alix, who finished fifth and fourth, respectively, in the Italia Challenge, were followed by third-place finisher Alejandro Reyna of Costa Rica, who chalked up 1350 pins, Thierry Sacco, France with 1334 including a 297 game, Italian Nicola Pongolini with 1314 and Perttu Jussila, Finland with 1304.

Those six bowlers of Squad 5 moved into the top 10 in the overall qualifying standings. Squad 6 leaders Mark Jonasdofsky (left) of Germany and Linas Sasnauskas (right) of Lithuania shook up the leaderboard to move into third and seventh place with 1366 and 1319, resp.
Previous leaders Olivier Leroy of Belgium (1322) and Andrea Domeniconi of Italy (1305) fell to sixth and ninth place. Multiple French champion Isabelle Sacco is the best of just five women in the 78-player field from 10 countries in 29th place with 1194 including 48 pins handicap.
Aldino Tedone of Italy currently holds the 35th and last place to qualify directly for the finals with 1173 or an average of 195.50 average.
Qualifying continues Tuesday, July 9, with Squad 7 & 8 scheduled for noon and 4 p.m. CEST.
The 9th Storm San Marino Open is the 10th stop of the 2013 European Bowling Tour and the third out of six EBT "Gold" tournaments this season. The tournament will be held July 6-14 at 18-lane Rose'n Bowl in Serravalle, San Marino and offers total prize fund of 60.000 Euro with 8.000 Euro going to the winner, 5.000 to the runner-up, 3.500 to the third and 2.500 to the fourth place finisher.
The San Marino Open features a 41 feet Kegel lane conditioning pattern with 23.32 ml volume oil total.
The qualifying of the San Marino Open (six-game series, unlimited re-entries) runs from Saturday July 6 through Saturday, July 13 with the last qualifying squad 21 scheduled for 9 p.m. CEST. The qualifying winner will receive a 1.000 Euro bonus.
Qualifying concludes with the one-game Desperado Squad scheduled to start at half past Midnight on early Sunday morning. Women receive 8 pins handicap each game throughout the entire tournament, a standard for women on the European Bowling Tour.
A total of 48 players will advance to the finals on Sunday, July 14 - the top 35 players from the overall qualifying standings plus the top 3 from the squads conducted on July 6-7, the top 3 from the squads conducted on July 8-9, the top 4 from the squads conducted on July 10-11, and the top 3 from the Desperado Squad.
The top 8 qualifiers receive two byes and qualifiers 9-16 get one. The other 32 players will bowl four games from scratch to cut to the top 16, who will meet qualifiers 9-16 in round two. Those 24 bowl another 4 games from scratch to cut to the top 8, who will join the top eight in the last four-game round before the cut to the top 4 who will determine the winner in a traditional stepladder final.
The 2013 European Bowling Tour consists of 19 tournaments in 13 countries including two Platinum, six Gold, four Silver and seven Satellite events.
The top 50 men and the top 50 women in each event earn ranking points based on how they finish. The winner of a Platinum tournament receives 250 ranking points, the winner of a Gold tournament such as the San Marino Open gets 150, the winner of a Silver tournament earns 100, and the winner of a Satellite tournament gets 50 ranking points.
Points are tabulated throughout the season and the top 12 men and the top 12 women qualify for the seventh EBT Masters to be held March 3, 2014 at Dolfijn Bowling in Tilburg, Netherlands immediately following the EBT Hammer Bronzen Schietspoel Tournament 2014.
