Norman Neumann becomes first player to surpass the 1400-mark in San Marino
07/10/13

Norman Neumann (pictured left) of Germany posted the first 1400-series of the 9th San Marino Open in Squad 8 on Tuesday evening en route to move to the top of the 101-player leaderboard.
Neumann rolled six consistent games between 222 and 246 at Rose'n Bowl in Serravalle for 1403, an average of 233.83, to overtake previous leader Petteri Salonen by nine pins. The Finn slipped to second place with 1394, followed by Yoan Alix of France in third place with 1390.
By virtue of finishing 1-3 of a separate leaderboard of Squads 5-8, Neumann, Salonen and Alix will be automatically qualified for Sunday's finals in the unlikely event that they will fall out of the top 35 until the end of the qualifying.

If everything goes like normal, three other players of Squads 5-8 will take advantage.
Swedish women's duo Rebecka Larsen (left) and Caroline Jonsson were 25 pins behind Neumann in Squad with 1378 including handicap. The tie for fourth place overall was broken by the higher last game, 244 to 191 in Larsen's favor.
Six place belonged to Serge Frouvelle (right) of France, who led Squad 7 with 1371 (228.50 average) including high games of 263 and 256. Rounding out the top 8, who will receive two byes for the finals, were Mark Jonasdofsky of Germany (1366) and Alejandro Reyna of Costa Rica (1350).
Sergio Fabbietti of Italy currently holds the 35th and last place to qualify directly for the finals with 1215 or an average of 202.50 average.
Qualifying continues Wednesday, July 10, with Squad 9-11 scheduled for noon, 4 and 8 p.m. CEST.
