Finnish five some defeat three-time defending champion USA, 1183-1126, in a re-match of the 2010 Men's World Championships; USA gets silver, Korea and Denmark share the bronze; Championships conclude later this evening with the Award Ceremonies for the Team events and the Victory Banquet

 

The Finnish men won the first gold medal since 30 years in the Team event when they defeated three-time defending champion United States, 1183-1126, in a re-match of the 2010 Men's World Championships.

With the Finnish victory in the prestigious five-player Team event competition in the 2013 combined adult WTBA World Championships concluded at Sunset Station's Strike Zone in Henderson, Nev.

The first combined Championships since 2003 will conclude later this evening with the Award Ceremonies for the Team events and the Victory Banquet.

Finland's Osku Palermaa, Perttu Jussila, Pasi Uotila, Petteri Salonen, Joonas Jehkinen and Tony Ranta (pictured above,l-r) took revenge for 2010, when the USA defeated Finland 1073-1057 in a come-from-behind victory in Munich, Germany.

The higher-seeded Americans had chosen the 39-feet Seoul lane conditioning pattern for the finals battled it out for the title in a packed Strike Zone bowling center.

The match was close until the seventh frame when the Finns started to pull away. They widened the lead frame-by-frame but didn't make the mistake to count the Americans out.

John Janawicz, Mike Fagan, Bill O'Neill, Tommy Jones and Chris Barnes (left) all struck in the ninth frame but the Finns rebounded with a strike in the 10th frame to wrap up the title.

Uotila (right), who led his team with a 267 in the semifinal win against the top-seeded Koreans yesterday, was the "man of the match" with 279 and was followed by Salonen (258), Ranta (236), Jussila (206) and Palermaa (204).

Team USA led the men's medal with three gold, two silver and three bronze medals. Korea was next with one gold, two silver and four bronze medals. Canada (Trios) and Finland shared the remaining gold medals.

The Korean men and women (pictured; click on the image to enlarge) led the overall medal tally with five gold medals, four silver and five bronze medals, just one bronze medal ahead of Team USA thanks to an outstanding final day in which the Koreans took swept the gold medals in Masters and also captured the women's Team title.

The 2014 Men's World Championships and the 2015 Women's World Championships will be held in Abu Dhabi, UAE.

The World Tenpin Bowling Association World Championships ran from Aug. 16 thru 31, 2013 at Sunset Station's Strike Zone in Henderson, Nev. in the Las Vegas area. The Championships awarded medals in six disciplines - Singles, Doubles, Trios, Team, All Events and Masters.
