Roth wins inaugural Generations Bowling Tour title in Bay City

Mark Roth (pictured with his wife Denise) won the inaugural Generations Bowling Tour title by defeating Dale Eagle, 237-234, in the title match of the GBT Bay City Open. The 34-time PBA champion and 4-time PBA Player of the Year earned $13,500 for the victory at Bay Lanes. Eagle cashed for $8,800 for second.
In the final match between the two division champions (Classic 50-59, Legends 60+), Roth started with a five-bagger to open up an early lead. Eagle came back to within 14 pins of the lead, but a 7-10 split in the 8th stopped his momentum. He then finished with a four-bagger forcing Roth to mark in the 10th. Roth left a 10-pin, spared, and then got an eight-count good for the three pin victory.
"Winning this first GBT event means a lot to me. Believe me. Just being out here with the guys I've bowled with for 30 years means a lot. I want to thank Steve Sanders for giving us this new tour and thanks to Richie Sposato at Lane 1 for believing in me," said Roth.
In spite of an injured finger, Roth averaged 241 in the stepladder finals, using a Lane 1 Super Carbide ball. Now he has three days to rest the injury before starting a new GBT event in Clinton Township, Michigan. "I got three days to live in the glory," he said. "Then, it's back to work."
"The lanes changed a little at the end," said Dale Eagle (pictured right). "I got a bad break on the 7-10, but Mark just bowled better. It's as simple as that."
The Generations Bowling Tour now moves on the Clinton Township, Michigan for the second of 35 tour events. The Detroit GBT Open runs at Imperial Lanes in Clinton Township from October 7-11.

With one 8-game match play round to go, the new leaders in the GBT Bay City Open are Dennis Psaropoulos (left), Lake Worth, Florida in the Classic Division (50-59) and Dale Eagle in the Legends Division (60+). Psaropoulos moved from third to take the lead and Eagle moved up from the runner-up spot.
"It felt pretty decent today," said Psaropoulos. "I tried a couple of different surfaces, and I re-arranged the tape in my thumbhole. That gave me a better grip so I could repeat more shots. I had a problem with the feel yesterday; today, I only had to make minor adjustments."
"Basically, I just changed my roll and angle to the pocket, and the carry got better," said Eagle. "Same thing for tonight – I'll just try to make good shots."
Second round leader David Ozio is now 38 pins back in the Classic division going into the final round, and Larry Hoffman, Fountain Hills, Arizona trails Eagle in the Legends division by only 3 pins.
After eight more games, the top four from each division will advance to a stepladder finals. The two division winners will bowl each other for the Bay City Open GBT Championship and $13,500 Thursday evening.
David Ozio's plan to play a more direct line worked out well in the first round of match play in the Generations Tour Bay City Open at Bay Lanes. "I beat the pocket 'til it was stupid, but I didn't carry very well," he said after going 4-3-1 in the first of three 8-game blocks to keep his lead in the Classic Division (50-59).
Ozio said he will keep the same strategy on Wednesday, but use a more aggressive ball to carry the corner pins.
The biggest move of the first match play round was by Mark Weller, Jonesville, Michigan. Weller won six of his matches to move into second place behind Ozio, only 35 pins out of the lead.
Roy Buckley also maintained his lead in the Legends Division (60+) by playing his usual down-the-boards style. Buckley posted a 5-2-1 match play record Tuesday evening to earn a 58 pin lead over second-place Dale Eagle.
Round two begins Wednesday at 10 am, and the final 8-game block will roll at 7:00 pm. The stepladder finals featuring the top four players will be held at 7:00 pm Thursday evening.

The tournament at Bay Lanes in Bay City, Mich. is the opening event of the newly established Generations Bowling Tour. The top 16 players from the 50-59 division and the top 8 from the 60+ group after 16 games of qualifying advanced to the first round of match play.
"My first goal was to lead the qualifying, now my goal is to win," said Ozio. "I've been looking forward to bowling in the GBT for a long time, and to lead in the first event is even better."
Ozio bowled in Squad B and totaled 3672 pins for the 16 games of qualifying, an average of 229.50, and will start the match play only 14 pins ahead of Squad A leader Dennis Psaropoulos, Lake Worth, Florida. Psaropoulos made a strong run at Ozio's score in Monday night's round, finishing with a 268 game for 3658. "I chopped a spare in the last game, or I would have caught him," he said.
Also making a run at the lead Monday evening was Mark Roth (right), Fulton, NY. Roth fired a 279 to start his round and will go into match play as the #3 seed with 3622 pinfall total. He averaged 226.38 for the qualifying portion of the event.
The first 300 game of the event was rolled in game one Monday evening by Leo Scantamburlo (left), Riverview, Michigan, but it as not enough to put him in the finals. Scantamburlo finished 17th with 3437, missing the cut by only 45 pins.
In the Super Senior group, Buckley held on to his lead with 3571 pinfall total and an average of 223.19. Trailing Buckley by a mere 33 pins to sit in second place was Chuck Pierce, Dallas, Texas with 3538, First round leader Larry Hoffman finished third, only one pin behind Pierce with 3537. Dale Eagle was another seven pins behind in fourth with 3530. The picture shows Buckley (l.) and Eagle (r.).
"It's great to lead the qualifying. Now I just hope I bowl better in the match play," said Buckley. "I really like this format, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the tournament." It took a 217.63 average to make the cut in the 50-59 division (top 16), and a 212.38 in the 60+ division (top 8). In the 60+ group, Harley Trumbull, New Boston, Michigan rolled a huge 276 in his final game to capture the last spot in the match play finals with 3398.
Dennis Psaropoulos, Lake Worth, Florida is the first round leader in the inaugural Generations Bowling Tour Bay City Open at Bay Lanes. He averaged 239.5 to lead all 75 players in the first eight games. Dennis bowled Sunday morning in 'A' squad. Today, he will roll in the afternoon.
The 'B' squad leader Sunday evening was Warren Michigan's Mike Lucente. Mike averaged 237 to lead all 'B' squad bowlers with an 1896 eight-game total.
In the Super Senior group, Larry Graybeal (right) came on strong Sunday evening in the 'B' squad, rolling a 289 his last game to jump to the top of the 60+ list. Graybeal hails from Elizabethtown, Tennessee. He averaged 230 for his first 8 games.
The second Round of qualifying rolls on Monday with 'B' squad starting at 10 a.m., and 'A' squad will be back on the lanes at 5 p.m.
"It's Real – It's Here" was the slogan for the new Generations Bowling Tour over the past few months. In Bay City, Michigan, the new national senior tour is indeed here – and it's real with a 50 foot domed players locker room, state-of-the-art ball drilling truck, a mobile office and a staff of a dozen veteran tournament staffers, including tour owner Steve Sanders, who has been planning the tour for more than two years.
It's also real with 75 top senior tournament bowlers, including Hall of Famers Mark Roth, Johnny Petraglia, David Ozio, Gary Dickinson, Roy Buckley, Henry Gonzalez and many more. Round one got underway this morning with 'A' squad at 10 a.m. to roll its first eight games. 'B Squad' will bowl tonight starting at 5 p.m.
"It's realizing our dream," said Sanders as the tour got started. Pro-Ams concluded Saturday, and qualifying will continue through Monday. After 16-games of qualifying, the top 24 players will advance to matchplay, which begins at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening. After the round-robin matchplay rounds Tuesday and Wednesday, the Final Four will advance to a Stepladder Finals at 7 p.m. where the first GBT Champion will be crowned.

Ozio and Eagle earn No.1 spots in GBT Bay City Open Final Four
It has been said by many wise men that true champions step up when it counts, and that statement rang true in the final 8-game match play round in the inaugural Generations Bowling Tour event at Bay Lanes in Bay City, Michigan Wednesday night.
In the Classic Division (50-59) David Ozio performed brilliantly, averaging 226.9 for the 40 games, posting a 15-7-2 match play record. He finished exactly 100 pins ahead of second place Dennis Psaropoulos with a total pinfall of 9557. Ozio cemented his top spot with a 279-244 victory over Gary Dickinson in the 7th game of the final round. L-R Ozio, Psaroloulos, Weller and Roth.
"Wow! It's the same emotions and feelings I had 20 years ago coming down to this position – it was identical! I didn't think I'd ever feel that again," said Ozio. "It's thrilling to lead, and it would be even better to finish it off, but there are a couple of hurdles to cross; one named Roth, and Psaropoulos is a really, really good player, and so is Weller."
Mark Weller leaped seven spots in the final 8-game block en route to finish third with 9202 pinfall total. Mark Roth came from behind in the final position round game, beating Mike Henry 278-245 to slip into the final four by a mere 3 pins. Roger Bowker also made a move with a 278, but fell just short. "I just moved in looking about 15 and the ball was kicking out pretty nice," said Roth. "I knew what was happening behind me and I knew I couldn't miss."
Dale Eagle dominated the final round in the Legends division (60+), to finish with a 9487 total and a 222.9 average for the event. He won 19 of his 24 matches. "It's a great feeling to lead this inaugural GBT tournament," he said. "I'm off to a good start, and I hope I can get the win tonight."

Ozio and Buckley hang on to qualifying lead in Bay City Open
With qualifying rounds in the Bay City Open complete, Hall of Famers David Ozio (left), Beaumont, Texas and Roy Buckley (right), Westerville, Ohio are the tournament leaders in the Senior and Super Senior divisions going into the match play finals. The tournament at Bay Lanes in Bay City, Mich. is the opening event of the newly established Generations Bowling Tour. The top 16 players from the 50-59 division and the top 8 from the 60+ group after 16 games of qualifying advanced to the first round of match play.
"My first goal was to lead the qualifying, now my goal is to win," said Ozio. "I've been looking forward to bowling in the GBT for a long time, and to lead in the first event is even better."
Ozio bowled in Squad B and totaled 3672 pins for the 16 games of qualifying, an average of 229.50, and will start the match play only 14 pins ahead of Squad A leader Dennis Psaropoulos, Lake Worth, Florida. Psaropoulos made a strong run at Ozio's score in Monday night's round, finishing with a 268 game for 3658. "I chopped a spare in the last game, or I would have caught him," he said. Also making a run at the lead Monday evening was Mark Roth (right), Fulton, NY. Roth fired a 279 to start his round and will go into match play as the #3 seed with 3622 pinfall total. He averaged 226.38 for the qualifying portion of the event. The first 300 game of the event was rolled in game one Monday evening by Leo Scantamburlo (left), Riverview, Michigan, but it as not enough to put him in the finals. Scantamburlo finished 17th with 3437, missing the cut by only 45 pins. In the Super Senior group, Buckley held on to his lead with 3571 pinfall total and an average of 223.19. Trailing Buckley by a mere 33 pins to sit in second place was Chuck Pierce, Dallas, Texas with 3538, First round leader Larry Hoffman finished third, only one pin behind Pierce with 3537. Dale Eagle was another seven pins behind in fourth with 3530. The picture shows Buckley (l.) and Eagle (r.)."It's great to lead the qualifying. Now I just hope I bowl better in the match play," said Buckley. "I really like this format, and I'm looking forward to the rest of the tournament." It took a 217.63 average to make the cut in the 50-59 division (top 16), and a 212.38 in the 60+ division (top 8). In the 60+ group, Harley Trumbull, New Boston, Michigan rolled a huge 276 in his final game to capture the last spot in the match play finals with 3398.

Psaropoulos takes first round lead in Bay City Open
Dennis Psaropoulos, Lake Worth, Florida is the first round leader in the inaugural Generations Bowling Tour Bay City Open at Bay Lanes. He averaged 239.5 to lead all 75 players in the first eight games. Dennis bowled Sunday morning in 'A' squad. Today, he will roll in the afternoon. The 'B' squad leader Sunday evening was Warren Michigan's Mike Lucente. Mike averaged 237 to lead all 'B' squad bowlers with an 1896 eight-game total.
In the Super Senior group, Larry Graybeal (right) came on strong Sunday evening in the 'B' squad, rolling a 289 his last game to jump to the top of the 60+ list. Graybeal hails from Elizabethtown, Tennessee. He averaged 230 for his first 8 games. The second Round of qualifying rolls on Monday with 'B' squad starting at 10 a.m., and 'A' squad will be back on the lanes at 5 p.m.
Generations Bowling Tour kicks off in Bay City
"It's Real – It's Here" was the slogan for the new Generations Bowling Tour over the past few months. In Bay City, Michigan, the new national senior tour is indeed here – and it's real with a 50 foot domed players locker room, state-of-the-art ball drilling truck, a mobile office and a staff of a dozen veteran tournament staffers, including tour owner Steve Sanders, who has been planning the tour for more than two years.
It's also real with 75 top senior tournament bowlers, including Hall of Famers Mark Roth, Johnny Petraglia, David Ozio, Gary Dickinson, Roy Buckley, Henry Gonzalez and many more. Round one got underway this morning with 'A' squad at 10 a.m. to roll its first eight games. 'B Squad' will bowl tonight starting at 5 p.m.
"It's realizing our dream," said Sanders as the tour got started. Pro-Ams concluded Saturday, and qualifying will continue through Monday. After 16-games of qualifying, the top 24 players will advance to matchplay, which begins at 7:00 p.m. Tuesday evening. After the round-robin matchplay rounds Tuesday and Wednesday, the Final Four will advance to a Stepladder Finals at 7 p.m. where the first GBT Champion will be crowned.
